Just bought Moi and here are my first results with it. Very impressed with it - as usual, I have failed to read the manual (who does ?) but I am managing to muggle along quite happily....

Hey are

MoI is great - I bought it a little while ago. Very cool tool. Michael has done a great job for a V1. V2 has great promise. I'm really looking forward to the organization stuff like grouping and layers.

I'm also trying to learn modo at the same time so not much to show in MoI yet; but I'll get something done sometime

Looking forward to seeing more stuff as you get to grips with MoI.

I'm also looking forward to V2 - trouble is it always appears to be "two weeks" away

I'm trying to "learn" modo- but it is a program with too many options and I will have to read the manual - infact just bought the new Dan Alban book and coursework ... just need time now to play .

(Just re-read this and wanted to clarify - the coursework that comes with the book ( there is a dvd that comes with the book with lessons on it) not the coursework that came out as a seperate dvd a few monthe ago - which I also have)

I'm working my way through the tutorials. I found that the wmd one that comes with modo, although slightly out of date, taught me a lot. I did the modo in focus series with the demo and I've also purchased the new concept car and cartoon kid.

I would be interested to know if you think the Dan Ablan book is worth it. Keep us posted.

Worth it ? Well I bought my copy from one of the amazon (uk) sellers and it was about £20 to £25 so for that price I don't think you can go wrong. Not had it very long and am not a long way into it. Comes with some quicktime on a dvd . Probably nothing in it you could not find elsewhere but I like his style. It gets my vote at the moment but I will let you know better in a few weeks if you can hold off that long ?

re - WMD videos. I was thinking it would be a good model for moi ?

Yes, wmd is probably ideal for making in MoI. Though with over 700 items I would want to wait for V2 and layer/grouping before starting that

Concerning the book - I am about 1/3 of the way into it and am finding it rather basic - great for someone new to 3d or modo (like me) but maybe too basic for someone who has already followed some other tutorials. I am learning quite a bit though and have had several "Ah, now that makes sense !" moments.

Still splitting my play time between moi and modo but there has been another beta release of 3dcoat which has added a topology brush (not sure if that is the right term) so now 3 new toys and still not enough time. Seriously though (and I hope I don't sound like an advert) 3dcoat is well worth looking at.

Another moi to modo test. A remake of an old model from a few years ago.

Not sure why I can't see through the glass - off to do a bit more reading. Think I will change the materials a bit.

Hi Are. What’s lighting your scene? If it’s just the 2 luminous orbs, then it won’t penetrate through your glass shader. If properly setup as glass (100% Fresnel reflection) then all the light from the orbs is hitting the glass at a glancing angle and will bounce. Also if light is penetrating the glass from another light source or from GI, it may not have enough bounces to return out from the robot again. Try placing some random object inside of the robot, near the glass. Is it visible in the render? That would mean at least some light is getting in there…

I thought this might be the case. I've done a few of the tuts now so I might just give this a miss.

Thanks for the info

The nice thing about modo is consistency of the tools. So once you learn the basics, everything else makes sense. I got through about half of the 201 book (and included videos) and never looked back...

fyi - I've gone and tried a simple scene to try to get glass working and had no problems. Trouble with trying to correct my robot scene is that I had altered so many thing I don't think I will find what I did wrong. Anyway I will re import the model and try again over the week end. Thanks for your help.
