Hair

Hello everybody.
Today I tried to do some hair.
I wanted to create a hairstyle and therefor wanted to dublicate several different strands I created before and place them on several special shading domains.
I thought I could realize this with the surface dublicator... For the front-strands it turned out ok. But the side-strands and the strands in the back looked weird
It does not matter whether I align the object to normal or not... there must be a trick!
(I also tried to do it with the anything that grows plugin, but somehow it didn't take my reference objects as references for the hair?)

Isn't there anybody who is able to make a simple tutorial on how to create hair? I'd even like a tutorial which shows how to do it with a simple alpha-map. Mine always looks strange as you can see in the mangagirl threat.

I've found a few, but for other programs. This one for lightwave looks good enough, and could be trasposed to another modeling program.
