well I used to pose the character only, but I use lightwave along time ago and was very hard compare to carrara, but mabey the new LW version is more easy. I make the bones and apply to the model and make some modifications with the vertex paint, then you can set up the IK very quick. You can download a trial version of carrara 5 an see if you liked,

waw ! there is effectly a lot of icon on your dekstop ! on mine, there are only 2 icons

(I prefer to use the sart menu and the quick launch bar)
