Falloff mapping

I'm trying to create an x-ray effect, but I'm having troubles.

Max has a falloff texture for doing this sort of thing. I was hoping I could mimic this with the fresnel setting, but I don't think it's the proper tool for this.

This is the effect I'm trying to create.

Hi !
You need Shader Oops (use fake fresnel) from DCG :

Check this thread out, I tried to do it without plugins, works in some cases, and not well in others, tell me what you think...

http://forums.polyloop.net/showthread.php?t=8076

Plugins thing for Carrara is waste of money and time in my opinion (please do not understand me wrong, guys, I'm not trying to put developers down, they are doing it cuz Carrara is soooo unfinished piece of software all over), makes community very diverse and ruins the communication between users and ability to help each other to the certain degree, sharing knowledge and shaders, solution like "you just have to buy this plugin" is really not a solution IMO. If they are all for free, it would be different, cuz everyone would have them.

DAZ should change policy on this thing and start refining Carrara's own features and make them capable as they should be in the first place

I was asking how to do this in Shade, but thanks for the replies anyway.

The picture is an example from the Shader Ops plug-in, so I can understand the confusion.

@ LoneGunman - That's an interesting thread.

I like Carrara. It's on special at Daz at the moment, so maybe this is a good excuse to buy it.

Yes, I see it, thanks. In Callisto the effect I'm looking for referred to as Parameter Attenuation.

Unfortunately, I'm using Shade Std. One day I'll upgrade.

I'll post a sample in a couple of minutes. Just a test, but it will help you as a basis

I didn't spend a lot of time on this, you will may need to find a better way to use the light. In fact, the Shader Ops show you a fake Fresnel effect. Shade 8 have this feature, you don't have to use Callisto to do it. To have a better result, use the pathtracing, with a soft skylight. I use a spot, but I think you can avoid it.

In attachement, a test render, and the scene. I hope it will help you!

That's exactly what I was looking for , thanks.

The result is a lot more realistic than the shader ops version imo.
All I've done in this pic is added another green spot and altered the intensity a bit.

It isn't great, bit now I understand the process I should be able to get looking okay with a bit of practice.

Thanks again.
