I don't know what to say. You really need to put some time into it. Most people don't start making characters till after they have been modeling for quite some time like a year or two at least. You need to start with props weapons silverware furniture and then work on your skills.

I wouldnt mind doing props as well i just thought of starting with the clothes and characters because the first program i got was poser 5 and was messing with the face morphs though trying to do anything else i was at a loss untill i had found a free program and now im trying my hand at the hair.

what do you think would be a good starting point for props?

If talking with me via msn or yahoo i have both on atm.

My latest thought is that you need Carrara5 Pro as your minimum. Two years full time working with it--and all the tutes available.

Then- if you can produce what people want to pay for you may earn some pocket money occasionally!

Forget about the hardest things like clothing and people. See what you can do with a cube or a sphere etc first.

Three years at university level training in computer stuff for three of my sons, one a doctorate, and only one of them--the least trained, has a job using his 3D skills!

I have just reread some of this thread and I think the following may be of help

Poser, Bryce etc do not really "Make" anything in 3D--they are really the low end "fun" toy programmes. Most of the stuff in those programmes is made in "Real" 3d programmes for use in Poser etc.

I go back to my earlier suggestion. Forget about any other programme you have or think you may want. It's only a small cost but get the more universal learning app for 3d, Carrara Basics.

Use that programme --with all the great tutorials available for it--spend the next 3months full time (minimum) just learning that app.

By then you may have an idea, not of what you want to do, but rather of what you, with a higher quality app are personally capable/suitable of progressing with.

I knew that the supporter was financial backer and I stand by my statement 100%. I am sorry to hear about your condition but as of now I would not think it wise for you to ask for money. Everyone has stated many times that you need to invest time "not" money into 3-D animation. It is hard to make money as a freelance artist. I do not want to sound discouraging but instead realistic about your future. My advice is for you to enjoy 3-D animation as a hobby for several years before trying to go professional . Learn to master the software before opening up shop for business. It would be like me trying to get a loan for an Auto Repair shop. I know nothing about auto repair. Having said that it would be wise for me to work as a mechanic at the local repair shop for a year or two before diving in head first with my own shop.

Do you have a demo or portfolio to show these people? My advice is to get a portfolio to show them. I don't think they should just give you money because you want to be an artist. They should maybe give you a leg up if you put in the effort for a few years to learn your kraft.

You cant specialise your learning!

If you havent mastered even one of those programmes you allready have--ESPECIALLY Photoshop, you need to forget any ideas about making life easy.

phylazian,

Did I say anything about 3-D animation? Do you have a portfolio of anything to show them? If you do not have a portfolio then invest some time in a portfolio before asking for financial support.

I agree with bwtr. You can not be that specialized and turn a profit. It would be like being a graphic artist and telling people you only design calanders but not flyes and brochures.

I do not think any of the advise is discouraging. Infact I think we are all trying to help. I think the issues we have raised will infact be an issue for you to deal with when asking for the financial backing.

I would have to say that you can specialize since there is so many different things you can do. You have 2d artists, 3d artists, and animators plus more. Anything can be specialized, a mechanic can specialize in fords or foreign model vehicals its the same principle, i have put a lot of thought into this, thats why im doing it. The way my mind works i constantly keep rethinking things over and over.
I do know how to use photoshop, maybe not as well as others but im always learning just like everyone else. Ever heard of the term jack of all trades and a master of none?
It is how i am, i know i sound overly defencive and i dont mean to, but I am determined to make this work. It is one of the reasons i have all these programs to begin with. I forgot to mention that I do have a partner that already has a few artists working with him and with his help and theirs I will be learning things even quicker. Im a hands on learner so other then getting into classes, which i have to wait for right now, its tutorials and self teaching that i rely upon.

And i do thank both of you for the advice and you too dann-o and at the moment i am trying to get the money for the carrara basics. Are you able to upgrade the basics to say 5 or 5 pro? future referance

A graphics studio that only does calanders will not make it. A mechanic who only works on over head cam shafts for Kia will not make it. One could ba a certifeid Kia or Ford technicain but they must know the engine/car inside and out not just the camshaft.

I think you should learn a 2-D or 3-D progam for several years before going Pro. You do not have to do animation but you need a portfolio. Do you have a portfolio? If the answer is yes please show some of your work for us to judge. If you do not have a portfolio start working on one.

You could get Carrara 5 Standard and then upgrade to Carrara Pro 6 later when it ships.
