Hi all, a big fan and dabbler of all artwork, both traditional and computer. My introduction and proficiency is at the 2d raster level, having photomanip'd many images over the years with such freebie software as was available. though I have long since acquired photoshop, I still have a special fondness for the Gimp.
I got a taste of 3d with truespace 1 I think, but got hooked by the possibilities once I started playing with a copy of poser 3, and then daz studio with it's open gl and 3delight renders. I ent from blank white posed statues that I painted features in layers over, to working more in the 3d aspects and involving the uv maps, the lighting and lens and camera properties. I don't want to be limited to playing with other's creations, no matter how cool they are (and they ARE cool!), so I'm slowly but surely developing my skills in modelling.
As I said, I like all art, and I'm not one to be snobby or elitist about 1 specific field versus another. to me, 2d image manipulating is a lot like drawing or painting, stuff like daz studio and poser can be very similar to photography, and modelling is like sculpting. All can be very good.
and that is as close to a soapbox as I will get
