2D to 3D question OK, it looks like I can start a new thread now, so to those who haven't read this, I would be grateful for any help with this question. Is it possible to place a 2D jpeg, pic, psd, tiff or pict into Carrara and turn it into a 3D object? If so, how? If not, is there another way to put a 2D graphic into Carrara and make it a 3D object. I don't have Illustrator. I'm using a G5 with tiger and the Carrara 5 demo at the moment. This is one of the tests I'm doing with it. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. Steve |

1) do you want to place an image to use as reference for modelling? (in this case SALA has given the correct answer) 2) do you want to use a 2D image ON a 3D object? (for example a still-life image on a painting suspended to a wall, in this case you are talking about texturing) 3) do you want to automatically transform a 2D image in a "real" 3D object mesh? (in this case ... this is near to a dream ... you must try to use special software like this) Let us know! Regards

He says "I don't have Illustrator". Therefore, I think it might be good because it refers. There are tools to draw the line like Illustrator also in Carrara and HEXAGON. Realistic Objects http://www.eovia.com/products/hexago...n_inaction.asp Instead of Adobe Illustrator import The line can be drawn HEXAGON and in Carrara. |

Thanks guys, I'll try to explain more clearly. What I'm trying to achieve is: I have a 2D logo for a university in jpg, pic. pict, etc. formats. I want to make it into a 3D object and spin it around, light it from behind, do camera tracks around it etc. Can I open this in directly into Carrara and extrude it on the z axis, if so how? or do I need to do something else first? I don't have Illustrator but I do have photoshop CS, FCP, Motion and Graphics Converter. Do I need anything else besides Carrara? Grateful for any help you can give. Steve |

If you have Photoshop you don't need Illustrator, just use the Path Tool in Photoshop, trace your logo (less points are better) and then use the Export command in PS as Illustrator Paths and import into Carrara or Hexagon and extrude them to your liking

Thanks for all the help so far, but it's not working. I put the logo into photoshop, traced it, exported as paths to illustrator, but when I try to export the resulting ai file into Carrara it asks me to choose a file (3dmf default) but none of them seem to work. I'm in the 3d view of a new, empty document. What am I doing wrong? |

Open Carrara, in the assembly room insert a spline object. This will place you in the spline modeling room, now go to file and import your ai path to the cross section plane. If your logo has several different paths you will need to combine them to form a compound shape.
