I know a lot of people at Daz use Poser, Vue, Daz Studio and Bryce. There is a need to buy content since none of the mention programs can model that well compared to Hexagon. If people get Hexagon and find it easy to use I think content sales could go down instead of up. I don't think the need to buy pre made models will be needed if a lot of folks buy Hexagon. They could create content with Hexagon but who will buy it? If everyone learns Hexagon most people will build their own models instead of buying them. Only time will tell. |

First off, I am a Guy. Spiritual Name (aka True Name) is Sarissi not Sarissa. The name is pronounced Sah ree see. It means "The Lord" and "Great Lord" (information provided by Archangel Gabriel). I won't answer any questions about this, so please don't ask. Figure it out for yourselves. You might be surprised at how many Poser/Daz Studio users want to contribute to the Poser Content market/community (even Bryce and Vue). There is a selection of quite good Free to inexpensive modelling apps that existed before Hexagon, and I see no decline in the contributions/sales of the Poser Content Market.

Most of this is suposition so please bear with me. Daz people that would use Hex2 to make Daz content are already doing it with another program. People that lack the experiance, knowledge, or ambition to make their own models buy them. I would guess that there is a much higher demand for content then people produce. How would Daz fix this problem, by inviting a lot of cg modelers to the site that wouldn't normally go there. Yes, Hex2 was a buggy hook to get you into the Pclub. And I'm sure most of us will be hanging around waiting on the forth coming patch, and then Hex2.1. So there will be quit a few that will stay in the Pclub long ebough to get Hex2.1 in a few months {$}. Sence I'm pessimistic that Daz will have it as a free upgrade, so $. Now Daz has your $ for the Pclub, $ for a few months of Pclub subscription, pluss $ for the 2.1 update. And fringe benifits. Say only 10% of the people that joined Daz to get Hex2 stay once the have it. We will assume that most people that want Hex2 are experianced modelers, so that 10% that stays with Daz can already model and probebly fairly well. Now lets say 10% of that 10% start adding content to Daz. Now Daz has several new contributers to Daz content, to fill that void between supply and demand. I just don't see how Daz can lose on this no matter how you cut it.

It's not hard to figure out why they make more money selling premade stuff than they do selling software. At most, any software company could have only about 1-3 main applications to sell. They have "selling peaks" such as major upgrades, and then dies down after a few months or so, at which point they're in the process of answering technical problems from customers, trying to track bugs and fixing them at the same time, which cost a lot of time and money. Compare that with selling a wide variety of premade models that has a maximum price of about $20. It's no wonder that they even have the money to buy Newtek, which according to the article was one of DAZ's choices to buy but opted for Eovia.

When Hexagon is offered for just $1.99 some novice 3-D users might get it and realize how easy it is to make their own models and never buy another Daz model. If they only create free content then Daz does not get a dime. If Daz charges for small .2 and .5 upgrades then they will loose several customers. Eovia would never charged for pathces and .3 upgrades. If Daz does charge for a .2 or .3 upgrade no one will ever buy Carrara or Hexagon again. I know I will not pay for .1 or .2 patches. Carrara and Hexagon always had great upgrades at great prices.

This is something all of us will have to wait and find out in due course, whether we are Positive, Neutral, or Negative about Daz right now. I am one of those that is Positive about Daz. Time will tell if that changes.

I agree. I thought the Bryce 5.5 should have been a free patch. Eovia would not have charged for such a minor upgrade. As of now I see no need to apreciate the buy out. I wish it did not happen. We will have to see if Carrara gets hair and cloth along with more Hexagon features. I think Eovia had the best products and the best upgrades. I bought Mimic from Daz but I do not think it is all that great and was way over priced.

So, Daz's new Bryce Dev Team had to learn the source code from scratch, and see the total mess it is, before they could get a handle on what could be done with it, in a timely manner. Not an easy task. Given the full circumstances, Bryce 5.5 is a new version, though not enough to be given a full version number (6). To bring to 6, it requires at least a partial source code rewrite, plus features (new and improved existing).

That's a wrong assumption. Corel aquired Bryce from MetaCreations around April 2000. About a year later, they came up with a major upgrade, Bryce 5, with tons of features. DAZ aquired Bryce around June 2004. They came up with version 5.5 almost two years later. Corel just didn't want anything to do with 3d, probably realizing the market to be so saturated. They have proven to be right where Adobe and Microsoft are the only leading competitors of their products. And they are winning. They have one that has no competition at all, and that is Corel Painter. |

KhrisK, I think Corel added more features than Daz did. The tree generator was the most obvious. I agree Daz has had Bryce for a decent amount of time and very little has been done. I don't think Daz has saved Bryce from dying a slow death. I think Daz has helped dig the grave. Bryce was a very good program 5 years ago. |

Hopefully this is not a Hex forshadow of things to come. However if Daz was truly in it for the money then version 3 should be quite amazing as they so many copies in every 3d lovers home... those will want to double $$ up for all the latest features. Could be a good thing, I'm hoping...
