I sympathize with -ash- here although we know Mac are not taking Eovia over. I bought Logic for the PC with all the add on instruments. Then Apple ditched it and bundled all the instruments into the Mac version. It put me off Mac but at the end of the day I eventually went over. Why? because Logic Pro is superlative software and Macs are excellent for audio. No matter how badly Apple treated the Logic cutomers it can't be denied that Logic is superb and Macs are great computers for audio. This did however make me wary of spending money on software. It's yet to be seen what will happen for the future of Eovia but Hex is not so far out in the lead as to be a must have purchase. Any uncertainty about the future of Eovia software will be very damaging especially just before the Hex 2 release. I have versions of Blender and Wings 3D on both my Mac and PCs. No problems on any platforms (Hex Mac anyone?) Free open source software that rolls on with very fast development in a market where dozens of apps all compete for mega money. Luxology sent me a mail offering Modo cheaper because I had tested but not bought. I sent them back a comment saying that at this stage I did not want to be locked into expensive proprietary software when their main competition is going to be open source. There will be casualties for sure with the proprietary stuff. There is no uncertainty about the future of Blender or even Wings 3D. They have a big future with very few obstacles. There is no room at all for any mess ups from proprietary competition. It seems to me they are all messing up. Hugely delayed release dates, dodgy take overs etc. I was waiting until the end of April to upgrade Hex but what happened to the cheap upgrade option on Eovia's site? No matter what you think about Daz this will not be seen as a cool move at all. |

Moonshot, Practice is important. There's no better way to learn than doing it as often as you can. I discovered a lot of things myself in the process. I found, for example, that you don't have to follow exactly what the tutorial says. That you can form your own edgeloops as long as they are in the right direction as you imagine them. That triangles and ngons can easily be manipulated to form quads, clean topology and with the right amount of edges. It's always best if you have a 2d image reference. |

@alain: I started may face referring to the "Boby Speed Modelling" - Tutorial by Thomas. It was a great help for the beginning, but after a while the effort of exact copying was greater than working by myself and now I'm totally on my own. I'm happy that modelling is easier than I expected. How does rigging, deforming and texturing compare to the difficulty of modelling? Did you use photographic textures?

I'm still into modeling and haven't got the need and time to do anything else. I've been playing with texturing, though. That would be easy for me. Art is subjective, and it's oftentimes a personal thing. Right now it's a hobby for me and experimentation. I would like to make money out of it someday.

I'm pretty confused about this take over. As a European customer it's good news, because now we can buy software exactly the same price as other part of planet is buying (+taxes). The bad news is, I bought Carrara 5 Pro just 3 weeks ago at 299 euros (about 385 dollars) price from Eovias European store. Now it's 299 dollars. Feel like fooled, big time... |

While any monkey could take a naked Vicky model, give it a stiff, unnatural pose and a vacant, unnatural expression and then render using the default Poser lighting, (like about 85% of everying in the Rendo Poser gallery) it does take an artistic eye to create something with any kind of pre-made content that resembles art.

I'll quote myself here from another thread: Quote:
How can you possibly justify hating the tool for what the weilder does with it? Nonsensical gibberish is what it sounds like. I don't judge a software solely by what it can output for the most part because what a software outputs is dependant on the user. Plain and simple. You judge a software company based on how well they treat their customers and understand their customers needs. I haven't had that many dealings with DAZ, but they have always struck me as a company that seeks to serve their user base. That is the feeling I came to have from Eovia and I don't yet feel that DAZ can't maintain that quality for me. Time will tell. Even though I am still a bit nervous about this merger (which I think is normal), I still feel better off with DAZ|Carrara then with Caligari. I mean, they just want to be known for being the first to do this and that and to force everyone to accept a single vision. DAZ created a place where people who love to create content and/or create with content could gather and grow from each other's experiences. Eovia nurtured a software to a point where it could compete with the best in capability at fair prices. If DAZ can create a synergy from these two ideals, then there will be no limit to the company's success. Don't persecute DAZ for the way some people use the content they sell. PS If DAZ|Carrara 6 doesn't include symmetrical modelling then curse you, I hate you all! LOL, Just kidding

I think people are being a tad paranoid about the DAZ takeover. Platinum Club costs $99 a year and I have seen constant additions since it became available. Compare that to a company like Caligari that charges $895 annually and added precious little over years of time. I never saw a reason to buy into Platinum Club before. With this acquisition, that may change. Maybe it won't. Really, I am scratching my head in bewilderment over some reactions. Why doesn't everybody who considers themselves 'real' artists just become brokers or content? If I could sell pretty lace panties to some guy for $30, who was just going to load it into a Carrara scene he will never render so he can drool over his keyboard, keep $15 and let DAZ have $15 to further develop Carrara I don't see a problem. I would be thinking about how I can be making money from this. Look at the people who can now put together Carrara tutorials and earn $25 (towards purchases) per tutorial that is accepted. You don't have to be a Platinum Club member to take advantage of this. AWBenson could submit his tutorials he did for Carrara to the DAZ one at a time and probably get enough credit to buy Hexagon with them. The opportunity is there to be capitalized on. When did content become a bad word?

If DAZ also has a big focus on the high-end users, I wouldn't mind that much that they are also concentrating on ready-to-render contents, which is obviously a big income-source. And to bring forward a good piece of software it needs money to afford the best programmers to do the job.
