I did consider buying a MacPro. But I liked what Boxx was offering... A lot of Rhino users are on Mac. And they say it runs very well under Parallels, of course it runs perfect under Bootcamp. And now there is Rhino OSX version being developed. Public beta has been around for a while now...

Yes, I saw it. However, it would be a little bit strange to buy a Mac and use it under Windows.

Why? The new Mac's are just PCs in a Mac uniform. But the hardware is identical...

Technically it is PC, but actually it's not, at least because I never heard about an option to buy Mac without Mac OS installed on it. Linux lovers could buy PC with no Windows on it.

What did you get and how much if you don't mind me asking. I bought a dual quad xeon from Dell awhile back and it was just about $2900. I had looked at Boxx but thought they were higher priced?

Once you start to add options to a Dell system, they become quite expensive. So my Boxx cost just less than $5K. But had some nice touches, such as 2 drives which exclusively support the OS, plus 4 more drives for data storage. I'm not even sure that Mac and Dell offer that type of configuration... One other thing that was nice about dealing with Boxx, I was able to speak to them about application-specific issues. So i felt comfortable that the machine would meet my needs. And I am very satisfied with it... Now i compare that to the Dell Precision which i had previously. That machine had a lot of issues, and Dell customer service is absolutely a nightmare to deal with...

That explains the cost, I just have a small drive(80gb) for my OS. All my programs and storage is on a 300gb with backup to a 500gb external which I purchased separate.

Yeah, I'm sure the drives are a large part of the cost. There is almost 1.2Tb of physical RAM, but with the RAID configuration my actual storage size is only 250Gb. So i plan to get a backup drive pretty soon...

Remember when 80Gb was a large drive? I had a 30mb drive one time and it was the largest drive in the department

Now I've got 500Gb in the PC and a 500Gb backup drive. How times change

Today I just bought a 320Gb portable drive that's the same size as my hand. Who knows when it will stop. They kept talking about the current technology is going to hit the wall. But doesn't seem to be happening...

I thought 250 seemed a bit small

...just don't call RAM what is disk space, please.

A typical graphic workstation could have 4GB or 8GB of RAM.

RAM memory and storage memory are completely different things (and their costs too).

Sorry to be picky, I'm an IT engineer and deal with hardware quite often.

Watching again Brad's presentaion on Siggraph 2008, I was thinking why they can not develop this SDK, if they already can give those Nexus thing to third parties.
Or, maybe, they can, and it will appear soon?

Lux is "baking" a modified version of the Nexus (modo) render engine so it can run within Microstation and Solidworks. I think it's not an example of a modo SDK, but instead is example of Nexus using the SDK of those other 2 programs.

They need, of course, to know, how to scan outer scene graph to reproduce it inside their own render graph (stack).
But, at least, their render engine is "tear away able" (or how I can say it in English?), so there exists at least some level of modularity.

To say it is "modular" is sufficient enough...
