It is faster. My bittorrent is now at 92% while the normal download is still at about 30%, which was started earlier. It's fastest when the traffic is less.

Torrents aren't working for me. Went with a direct download, let it run all night. Still had a half hour to go when I left for work.

My torrent took about 2.5 hours. Now i have to get the content downloaded. i just poked around in 301 for a few moments. Symmetry seems pretty stable. I was mesh sculpting, folding across seams, then smoothing out again without any loss of symmetry. Tried out the image based sculpt. Pretty nice response with a 1024*1024 map. Sculpt tools feel pretty natural. also had a minute to check out the new snapping features. true they are not up to par with with real CAD snapping tools, but i am really happy to have them now in Modo... Lots of new stuff to learn in this upgrade...

Shorty, does it still lose backdrop and saved viewport settings? Symmetry settings?
Are you working on PC or Apple?

I'm, on PC. Yeah i still notice some funny things with backdrop not "sticking" when changing the view. I haven't set up any custom viewport stuff yet. But so far symmetry looks rock solid. I'm trying but can't break it . And just for you, i created a sphere, turned off smoothing, pressed "D" 5 times and was able to sculpt on around 280,000 real polys. It was a bit sluggish but still usable. But at least the resulting sculpt was very smooth...

I clicked Download button further, but download of filedialog says that “the download presumption remainder time is 24 hours”.
I gave download up.

Today, as soon as getting up in the morning I tried to download again, butdownload of filerepeats same words(remainder time is 24 hours) as yesterday.

Bittorrent seems not to work for me.
So, I decided to wait for a few days.

I am quite impressed with 301 scutlping so far. I have it working now on 995,328 real polygons at useable speed (but a little bit slow). Even while using "image ink" it was working perfectly. I pressed "D" once more to increase to 3,981,312 real polygons and was still able to sculpt although not in real time. Then i hid a lot of the polygons and had no problem sculpting at about 1,200,000 polygons. The trick was to first click/press the mouse or style down. Then wait for a slight pause until the mesh started to sculpt. Then it was sculpting quite fluidly with nice smooth results until i ended the stroke. Lastly i revealed the full 4M mesh and tried to sculpt with this "hold and pause" method but Modo gave me a warning that i was dangerously low on resources... Most importantly through all this was Modo did not crash !!!

I think the poly count limit is due to my hardware (dual core 3.6GHz P4 with 2Gb Ram). If i had more RAM i think i definitely could have gone to higher polycounts...

sorry to hear that. What client are you using? I am using Azureus (Vuze) right now to download the tutorial videos and the speed is averaging 270Kb/s. Never used bittorrent before, but quite pleased with this result. Did you check to see if your firewall was blocking the bittorrent?

Thank for info, Shorty. So I can press "D" key six times now. Sounds promising.
Actually, 32-bit application address space is limited to 2GB in Windows. Only 64-bit can use more. Does modo 301 come in 64 bit version also?

don't know the answer to the 64-bit question... About pressing "D", i turned off subd smoothing first...

Thanks Tony, it's a little shallow for a good review, but not too bad. I hope we can see comparison/feature charts and that sort of thing with Modo and maybe even a little more in depth study/critique. I've crashed her once just going into UV's, but otherwise it's starting to look good.

Yes I did pick up one thing though, he says that you cant go back down in subd when you are sculpting, sounds a bit odd?? What does he mean? In other sculpts I often drop levels to do more tweaking

He's referring to sculpting on real mesh polygons. In Modo you either sculpt directly on the real control cage vertices, or you use image sculpting to achieve a finer sculpt than your mesh. There is no sculpting done on the implied vertices of a smoothed mesh as you would in Hex, Silo, ZB, etc...

Got my Modo on as well. One thing I'm having fun doing (Just playing around now..) is working with vector based displacement. Really smooth and works great. Its nice to have layers too. I can see having multiple layers of vector displacement maps and focusing the detail in each.

How to for getting started with vector displacement:

1. Create sphere
2. UV map the sphere using atlas
3. Create a vector map
4. Create a new material for the sphere
5. Drag the vector map into the material for the sphere
6. Select the vector map and switch to paint mode
7. Start painting away, make sure you are in advanced open gl

I was initially disappointed with Modo's edge modeling workflow, but after working with stickie keys a bit, it does almost have a decent edge extrusion workflow. But I can't find a smooth workflow for welding. Anyone have any tips on that?

I asked once a few months back, and the public opinion is that Modo has no good method for this yet.

Question about downloading. I was able to download the app itself, but BitTorrent messed up my router so I had to uninstall it. Is there any reason not to go ahead and create the license key before downloading the content and tutorials? I'm downloading the content now the regular way, but it's running about 15-20 kb/sec, so 9 more hours.
