Hiya. Y'know, the pricing of $2k to $7k wouldn't be all that bad....if they would just stop comming out with a new "upgrade" every frickin' 8 months! ![]() The other alternative is that they keep supporting, fully, at least the last 3 versions in stead of just popping out an 8.5 version, charging a grand or two to 'upgrade' and then pretty much ignoring everyone who uses version 7 or earlier. I'm *really* getting sick of the money game. Er...sorry for the mini-rant there. I'm just getting fed up with all these companies (which are slowly being bought by larger ones...not good!) who think people (from hobbyist's to companies) are made of money.

A tempting idea... BUT... I thought the academic version was limited to one year -- Is this true? And that anything exported to another program was either blocked or had some sort of imprint? Rumors? (I think I read this at the AutoDesk site). Aside from the moral implication of an agreement to the contrary, how would they determine if the program were used for a commercial purpose... it could just be one step in a pipeline. Just wondering. ![]() Edit... stuff like this is what I am referring to: Autodesk Media and Entertainment student software is an educational version of the software. It incorporates all the functionality of our professional licenses and includes education-specific features such as an education banner (What is this?) making the software inappropriate for professional, commercial, or for-profit purposes. there is definitely a morality issue here. but I don't know of any physical limitations on the software. not sure about the "banner" but it only says it's inappropriate, for commercial use...not unusable. I think I'm getting it, but will not use it professionally. the license will be in my daughters name and only installed on her computer. I'm also getting her CS3 Premium(for $589) I paid $1700 for my CS3 professional license she wants ZBrush too, but I gotta draw the line somewhere, and the Maya deal seems too good to turn down(plus I'm still a little peeved at Pixologic about the ZB3 on a Mac thing) I'll probably get them in a few weeks. I'm waiting for OS X leopard to come out before I order her new Mac. |

Rickei... At one time I installed the ple of Maya... not sure I kept it, 'cause the real mckoy is just out of sight - I don't need all the bells and whistles, not to the tune of $7k!! Not to start a flaming war here, just an honest question.... An artist I know at a publishing company was moaning and groaning a couple of years ago because his company was going from macs to pc's across the board. Now he would not go back to his mac for anything - that's neither here nor there, but just to illustrate that the os is not totally weird. Is the software you have cross-platform? I mean like Carrara (I think) can be installed on either Mac or PC. I have used both for quite a few years, and for the money and software available, I personally stick with my PC. At this point, if I were giving advice (nobody asked) I would advise that the road to the future in OS's most likely belongs to pc and a changeover is better sooner than later. (Ouch! watch for incoming artillery!!) |

I totally agree about the Maya pricing, it's rather insane, I don't think I would ever use that stuff either. not sure I could even figure it all out anyway. Thats why I'm getting it for my daughter ... If she gets good at it then I will buy her whatever hardware/software she needs. She is very interested in 3D, and I may be foolish, but if she can get good enough to work for me, or get a good job, or a scholarship, then $7k is not that bad of a deal.- many times, you get two installers with a software(Mac/PC) I'm not the type to really care one way or the other about which OS is best. but for me a PC is totally out of the question. Why...because I have never used one. I don't even know what Windows looks like. I don't know about the future, but i do know that Mac's have the largest user base ever. Plus I get at least one person a week, asking me if I can try to fix their PC, and I can honestly tell them that I don't know anything about PC's |

now i know what windows looks like!!! thats funny Nate. I keep thinking that I should get a PC, just to have around. but I don't really know where I will have room to put it.(3 desktops, an iMac, and two PowerBooks) For me, buying a computer is like taking a bath.
