Well, I'm a big MudBox fan, and a user of 3DMax. I'm not unpleased with the sale, I am fairly optimistic that MB will be left for the time being as a standalone. However MB 2, as stated by Dave Cardwell, will have an integrated 3D paint system. Integrated into the marvelously friendly and powerful interface with MB's displacement brushes and the promise of greater numbers of polys. But even more possibilities: think about what a synthesis of the combined best tools in Maya/Max/Motion Builder/Mudbox might look like if Autodesk is developing towards a single 3D app? Conjures some very happy thoughts in my mind.

If Autodesk is smart, they won't increase the price of Mudbox when version 2 is released. If anything, they should reduce the price to compete with Zbrush.

I using Zbrush v3 and just recently updated to v3.1.
Pixologic has done a wonderful job of making Zbrush super-user-friendly.

I enjoy v3.1 more than 2.5.
The upgrade for registered users of v2.5 is free.

I can export my creations to Carrara 5.1
Hopefully Carrara v6 will have support for normal maps.

All in all it's a good move for the guys at Skymatter.
I wish them mucho success with Mudbox.

Only time will tell if they can become as robust a modeling and painting program as Zbrush.

Cheers,
Gustavo
