CB Model Pro, another sculpting tool...

Any comment about this yet another sculpting thingy? People behind it are the makers of Cosmic Blobs (don't even know what that is), which is owned by Dassault Systemes, makers of Solidworks.

I have tried CB just 2 weeks ago. The concept is really simple. and it is able to do some pretty cool stuff. Like drawing a line and then pushing the line across the model to flatten it to the blob's shape. It also has a 3d paint system. And the program is 100% free, with export for the mesh and texture. It uses a "shape tool" library similar to ZBrush where you keep your custom models in a palette and drop them into the scene. But CB is a blob modeler so the export meshes will be badly constructed and very heavy (LOTS of long skinny faces!). It's not so good for any serious animation. But it's fun and can be useful for quick props in a still render. It's not really a "sculpting" app, but you can grab any location on the blob and push/pull the surface to become a spike... Cosmic Blobs is a program for kids. Probably another type of blob modeler, but i've never used it...

The Good:

- Really solid and pleasant interface. Uses a very intuitive approach to modeling. Probably the closest to real clay modeling yet.

- Lets the user keep pulling out an area of a mesh and rebuilds the detail of that area. This is really unique and never been seen before. (by me)

The Bad:

- There's no way to blend objects together. Not even a boolean function. Although to be fair, neither has Mudbox. Although Zbrush tackles the problem of creating complex forms by using those funky ZSpheres.

- The forementioned mesh pulling and rebuilding is quite limited. Basically, it will only allow you to pull on a specific area 3-4 times, then simply refuses to let you manipulate the area further. If this happens then you're screwed. It means a restart and a rethink. Hardly freeform modeling

The Ugly:

- The resulting mesh quality is pretty gruesome.

Oh, and the hopeful!:

In a few years, I dare say there will be the technology and CPU power available that will allow people to stretch a mesh indefinitely and blend them together seamlessly. I'll be delighted if CB Model Pro turns out to be the program that uses that technology.

The beta does not expire. But when they release the commercial software, it will have features which are not in the beta...

Forget it. It has been available for a while but try to get contact with the site!!!!

I find it hard to believe that such a badly organised site still exists. I have blasted @#$ out of the site suppliers but it is like talking to an answering machine.

Without proper import/export facilities it is a joke.
