It is really scary that Modo is developing so fast... I played with the beta a little bit. But don't have enough time to really learn it. Will definitely have to consider it very strongly, after it becomes a complete animation tool...

I am looking for a (dependable) software that could do sculpting (displacement painting) and this movie of upcoming Modo tools made a believer out of me. I will say that with these new features it appears that Modo the all-around 3D tool that I am looking for. I was thinking of Mudbox, but it needs a base mesh (model from another program) to do the detailing and sculpting, while it appears that Modo can take care of the modeling from the start. (Which was the promise of Hexagon that fizzeled). Want to see if Modo does edge looping, symmetry and things like Hexagon started to do (dynamic geometry where you can change the base mesh structure after building the model). I would hope when they get the sculpting going that you can alter the basic geometry without killing the displacement work, but based on that movie sneak preview it seems to work with layers so that should be a possibility. The other tools which I assume are there as a part of daily work would be symmetry, lofting, sweeping and array on curves/surfaces and those other necessities. I'm too buried in deadlines to have time to really learn Modo right at the moment, I renewed my license for the demo, but it says only 5 days left and I am hoping that I can renew again when that runs out. I think it is the smart way to go. Hexagon and Silo seem to be hanging on the edge of if or never: Either way not very dependable for pro work. Some of the other programs are way too complex for my needs which would rarely (if ever) include animation, and the workflow for them is overly complex. |

). Silo's a great program, but until they get displacement/normal map export working then we still can't use it too much for anything... I wouldn't expect Modo to do everything that other sculpt packages can do (as MB, ZB, or Silo). But those Lux guys are pretty darn smart, i would expect them to develop something unique for scuplting...
