[Modo]Modo 202 - What the Hex?

I got to the point of not wanting to fight Hexagon 2.1 and all the DAZ nonsense.

I bought a copy of Modo 202 and it is singularly the best SubD modeler I have used to this point. I also, gave Silo a shot, which is great as well. However, Modo allows you to render and render fast.

I like Hexagon, but who knows it’s future.

This was created following a tutorial provided by CG Beard.

I don't know. Modo seems powerful, but its workflow isn't that great. And I'm not sure what all the fuss is with Hexagon. Besides displacement and 3d paint there are no show-stopper bugs. In fact I came across more bugginess in Modo then in Hexagon. Check the Modo forums and you'll see lots of complaints.

That said. Modo is an excellent program, just not something I'd personally recommend, but everyone thinks differently. Great job Marc on the model.

Nichod,

I would have agreed with you on the subject of Modo but now I finally see what the fuss is about. There is no workflow. You create your own. Its difficult to explain really but for folks not convinced download the demo and give it a try. All the videos are there to learn from.

I must say I had to invest an evening to go through the basics videos to get a handle on why there are 8 action center settings. An action center is basically where the manipulator is within the model and what it is aligned with.

Creating scripts in lua, perl or python if thats what you like or just create macros for whatever you want. Its all there.

There are tools within Modo that, now I have played with them, I could not live without them. I am still discovering new ones and new ways to use them as well.

Painting and rendering are another subject that I could go on about for ages but I will stop boring you. :D Hopefully some rigging and hair shader will come along and it will be complete for me.

Cheers

Mike R

I'm so agree with you Mike !
We can tweak GI, Subsurface, transluancy and all other in and seeing what we do in a preview render in near real time ! It's the first time is tweak so precisely and fast my shaders . This renderer is so fast !
The modeler is really clever and the layer management for shader and render is really powerfull.

My 2 request are animations ( wich begin to come with scripts and export )
and a Matte shadow shader because sometimes i don't want to do compositing

Like for eovia Hexagon some month ago, i've buy this soft because i've seen a lot of good ideas inside and i would like to support software like this and the authors ( really professionnal and not expansive , Team really open to hear and help users )

Its odd though 3d painting is a lot faster in Hexagon than in Modo.

i haven't found Modo slow to paint texture. I've paint a lot with intuos 3 in 4096 . You must choose texture only for viewport maybe?
So, it's possible that hexagon be faster for painting with some 3D card . H2 is very impressive ! But not possible for me at this time to use H2 for painting.

The seams bug a very urgent task to debug. wich must be corrected in days but it is always here since how long ?

IMHO 3d painting in Hex is very half-baked and barely useable.

where did you get the tut?

Just got Modo and haven't had time to look into it too much, but it looks like a great app. I realize I need to learn the hows of it and such, my impression is that it is sort of an all-in-one app, adding some of the features of Hex, Carrara and (based on recent demo of upcoming features) even a little MudBox looking stuff later.

I have gotten pretty comfy with Hex for modeling.... I want to get that way with Modo and think all it takes is working with the program for a while... the same way I did with Hex.

Nate,

it is included with all the tutorial material that comes with Modo 202, look in the "hardsurface" folder under help/tutorials/video.

And the step from Hex to Modo workflow isn't that big, so you'll feel soon at home. Beware of the symmetry bug, it looks nasty for some, whereas others claim not to be burdened by it. For me Modo symmetry works reliable in points end edge mode, not in poly mode.

Ciao,
Wim

I have downloaded Modo several times just like the other apps. First thing I notice is the UI's very fine resolution. It's pleasing to the eye. Don't know exactly how they managed to code it that way. Honestly, I haven't been able to explore it fully. If you already have capable subd modelers like Hexagon or even Blender like I do in your toolset, it's hard to explore further what others have to offer. It's kind of like there is really nothing more to explore. However, Modo 202 seems a very powerful 3d app, but I'm more interested in its shading or material application and rendering capability. The sample images look stunning. It seems well suited for illustrators. It may well become one of those industry standards someday especially when animation features are finally incorporated.

Well, I'll wait till I see Carrara 6 which at its present state (C5) is already a very capable 3d package.

Wim....

I downloaded the Modo app (pro) and had to do the tuts and other stuff on a computer with a faster connect than mine. Then had to go out of town. When I get home I'll copy the files to my 2gig thumb drive and move them to the main computer. So... haven't even seen the tuts yet.

thanks for the encouragement about the ease of learning Modo. Hope they fix the symmetry - I use that a lot in Hex.

Does Modo have a mirror operation where you can copy one side and clone it to the opposite side and then weld?.... guess I'll find out when i start using the program....

There are a bunch of scripts you may find handy at this site.

Like you though I hope they fix the symmetry.

Cheers
