[Modo]modo 103

Daz is selling this app for 139 $ (for P members)
what about this software? It is an old version, how would rate it in comparision with Hexagon and Silo?

No, it's Modo selling it on the Daz site.

It ends up giving a good deal price on the current 301 Modo version.

Well but without the upgrade, it still worth if I already have Hexagon 2?

What's the difference between Modo 1 and 2? I've only used the 203 demo, and was quite impressed with everything except the price.

I suggest you wear out your current modeler. Did you see the kind of stuff that THOMAS can make with HEX? Heck the dude can make great characters with Amapi 6.1.

Before you start looking at other woman --oops! I mean other modelers, I humbly recommend spending some more time with the one you're with now, and see if you know all her tricks...

unless of course I've totally pegged you wrong and you're not out to do characters, but cars, rockets, engineering, architecture...etc,etc.

My 2 cents.

and no painting... I think there were some significant improvements to modeling and UV on 201. So 103 might not be of much use if you've already got Hex or Silo. But if you are planning to upgrade to 301, you will never find a better deal than this (not legally anyway)... I almost feel like buying it for the second time, just to catch the good offer...

Warning

I'd also look around to see what kinda bugs were left in it was well...

If there's an upgrade path to v301 then it may be a good way in but if you already have Hex, then 103 may not be worth it.

MOI being just a tad more expensive ($199) would be my choice especially if mechanical modeling is your goal.

That's not exactly true, shorty. Modo 103 is non upgradable. Meaning you have to buy full price for the later versions as if you don't own 103, which is the last version of the 10x series with the final bug fixes. Also, Lux is no longer providing any kind of tech support for this version. The thing I can't tolerate with this version (103), albeit not really important to most people, is that the mousewheel is not functioning as a zooming tool. Something that almost all graphics apps (2d/3d) normally have.

So I don't think that could be a good bargain.
Perhaps with the classic 1.99 platinium price ..

Actually Sketchy,

Reading the info in the following thread is in support of what shorty says: http://forums.luxology.com/discussio....aspx?id=18985

Affuso, as to whether to buy it now, well, it really depends on what your personal needs are; if you have Hex 2, it is a very competent modeler, and IMHO in fact does certain things better than modo 103, like working with curves. Other things I find easier in Modo, like UV unwrapping. But as said before, these are really personal things. As to taking the offer/upgrading, I guess it all depends on whether you need/want the renderer and texturing/painting abilities that 203 offer, or the sculpting/animation possibilities announced for 301.

hth,
Wim

P.S.: AFAIK, Silo also doesn't have a standard mouse wheel-zoom function coupling

Modo 103 is non upgradable.
From Daz:

Ready to Go
  • Software delivered via download (no hardware dongles!)
  • Upgradeable to later versions of modo
  • Viewport navigation and keyboard customization to match other 3D applications you may use
  • modo purchase includes both Mac OSX and Windows 2000/XP versions
From Lux:

If you are signed-in and already own modo (10X or 20X versions), you now have the option below to place a pre-order for the modo 301 upgrade at a reduced price also.

Where did you get the idea it wasn't upgradeable? If your right Daz should make it clearer.

[edit] From lux forums:

Everyone who purchases modo 103 can upgrade to 203 for $395, and get the free upgrade to 301, when it ships!

This way you're actually buying 301, regularly priced at $895, for 40% off!

OR

You can buy modo 103 now for $139 and when you register your modo 103 at Luxology's website, you can then pre-order the 301 upgrade for $295 directly from them. You will, however, NOT get 203 in the interrum, but you will save an extra $100!!!

$540 for modo all the way to 301! WOW!

Had to do it.

Excusses to give the Wife for why I need modo:
great modeler
great render engine
easy inexpensive path to 301 --- Which will be a 'WOW' app.
wide-spread industry praise and attention (there's a crowd around modo)
new code + fast development

Now only to tell her I already jumped.
I'm scared and happy at the same time! Is that what this modo stuff does to you?

$434 is even cheaper if you gel with the modelling intricacies

From Luxology website:
As of June 21, 2007: Purchases of modo 203 (Boxed or Download) at the normal list price ($895) and purchases of modo 203 Upgrades (Boxed or Download) at the normal list price ($395) will recieve a free downloadable upgrade to the recently announced modo 301 software when it ships. Just place your order and you will see a text message to this effect. Coupons and discounts are not eligible for this modo 301 upgrade offer.

If you are signed-in and already own modo (10X or 20X versions), you now have the option below to place a pre-order for the modo 301 upgrade at a reduced price also.

I did not notice any pre-order offer any less than $395 from v103 to v203 (for little guys) as of August 16 anyway. Awh shucks, maybe I missed some 'lil click box thingy that cost me a Franklin. Done worse...done better.

I have been slightly burnt before playing around with software offers in the past (if you know what I mean) certain pre-order deals. But, I have more of a solid feeling in regards to modo more than most 3d applications.

I think modo has a long solid future (as we all know predicting the fate of anything 3d is foolish!) and Luxology presents a tool worth taking the effort to learn. IMHO this a good deal for v203 alone. Also, as we all know, it can be almost as much about the software company as the software itself.

Yup, I stand corrected. Which means these are good offers from both DAZ and Luxology. Grab them before they end. And I agree, Modo has the best future of all the highend apps, IMO, especially when you think about the people behind it. I don't think C6 is in competition with these apps, anyway. Most people, like me, would add C6 in their toolset as an additonal tool.

BTW, I was also thinking of grabbing Zbrush 3 from DAZ.

Save another hundred...slow down a little before upgrading

From Luxology customer support:
You can get the upgrade from modo 103 to 301 for $295 but there is a trick to it.

After you register your v103 wait a day or until you see the upgrade option directly to 301. You have to be logged in and the offer will eventually show up. The problem is that the Luxology database needs to refresh to post the new information and I guess it could take a couple of days. If the upgrate from 103 to 301 does not appear then I would call Luxology. The Luxology rep told me that the $295 deal is actually a mistake and for some reason they can't change it.

So if you bought modo 103 from DAZ and you are after modo 301 slow down and wait before you jump on modo 203. I really did not want modo 203 but I ended up getting it out of not being aware of any of this.

I got a great deal but lost a hundred dollars because of this. I hope this helps anyone else that wants modo 301 save a hundred more bucks.

Good luck,
Stan

Reply from Luxology (Immanuel Martin):-

Hello,

In regards to the Daz promo, we are allowing people to upgrade to modo 301
only after it is released. So you could purchase modo 103 now and use it
until modo 301 is released. Then you could purchase the upgrade for $395.
You cannot purchase the modo 203 upgrade in the interim.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks,

Immanuel

Sorry Sadot,

Your statement is not accurate. I just called Immanuel at Luxology to get the scoop down solid on this and verify your post. I even read your post to him so the information below is 100% accurate.

1) You can upgrade from modo 103 directly to modo 301 for $295. Wait for the $295 option to appear on the Luxology website (it may take a day or two). Make sure you have logged in and that you can see the $295 upgrade option. If not call Luxology (Weird thing, they have answered all my calls on the first ring. Never seen anything so efficient)

2) Checked and triple checked. You can upgrade from modo 103 to modo 203 for $395 in the interim and still get modo 301 at no cost. I know because I did it and it cost me a hundred bucks more. Also modo 203 has already been installed on my system and shipped without a hitch.

So if you bought modo 103 from DAZ and you are after modo 301 slow down and wait before you jump on modo 203. I really did not want modo 203 but I ended up getting it out of not being aware of any of this. REMEMBER THAT THE $295 OPTION MAY TAKE A DAY OR TWO to show up on the Luxology website.

I got a great deal but lost a hundred dollars because of this. I hope this helps anyone else that wants modo 301 save a hundred more bucks.

Good luck,
