Thomas Can you construct things in modo using the edge extrude technique you have used previously, I think I read somewhere you were talking to luxology regarding that. Can you shed any light on making this technique easier in Modo?

I tried this software out in the hellfire widow contest sometime back, it had excellent UV tools, but didnt really have time to get comfortable with the modelling with what seemed like lots of options getting in the way of a simple workflow. But I was seriously impressed with the painting options and possibly rendering for stills, although the shading system was not that easy to understand.

The reason I ask is that obviously with questions over the future of Hex and Amapi and mudbox I have been having another look at modo too for sure. It at least seems to be going forward. (but not cheap )

PS It is not that I leave hex, amapi or mud, I have much loyalty, but that they leave me, why is that?????

I sympathize and I am with you all the way and there is only one answer: economics.

I decided this time around I am not going for price, or even all the features in the world. I only want good stuff that will be around for awhile under a single focused development team. A solid company that has solid direction and a large user base. And of course a very good application.

I am just very tired of watching my meager (yet important) software investments hit dead ends to the left and to the right of me. Over the past year all of my main software has changed development hands. Even some of the alternatives to replace my original workflow applications have ceased to be developed. Dead ends have burnt me out a bit.

A good application. A focused development team. A solid company that has solid direction and a large user base....modo by LUXOLOGY

I am hoping to relax with one software for awhile and modo just seems to be the most logical place for me.

I'm not Thomas but yes you can use edge extrude, look at the face tutorial and that is how the instructor models as well. It just not quite as fast IMHO as Hex/Amapi because of the UM they have. Same method for Silo as well, but their tweak mode is a little different.

I've picked up the 301 upgrade as well, to good to pass up. I like the render engine but not the modeling so much. I'll stick with Hex/Amapi for most things.

Some stuff you made with Modo 103/203 to show Ringo? We know your work with Carrara but not really with Modo (same for others! )

I gave up for one main reason : upgrades costs, and currently, I don't have the time to focus on animation, which is my main interest about XSI. But i don't mean that I stop about this package. It's a very good one and the Fundation is a good deal and the Advanced one really rocks! (but damn, not the same price...)
On another side, for daily stuff, Modo is faster than XSI and more easy to use.
Review is in the pipe, but now, almost done!

As Grendel answered, you can do the same kind of technicks in Modo, more by mixing the pen tool with the edge extrude and you have somethg good. On my side, the workflow isn't as fast as it can be (already discussed with one of the modo developer).
You will find some tips in my review about that

Thanks guys. From my small trial it has some improvement to the user speed required. I did not come to grips with how the toolpipe works, and maybe if mixing the pen and edge extrude gives me the modelling flow I have become used to in other applications, I will feel more favorable to it. I look forward to your review and tips Thomas.

Steama: My impression is that new products on the ground just seem to be developed to a certain point and then the developers cash them in, otherwise they run the risk of being overtaken by the big guys.
