Arrow I can not begin to explain ...

... How Im feeling right now.

Ok so I thought well ... Daz bought Eovia, well maybe I better get to know these guys abit better. See if my initial perceptions of there website being a "mowed down forrest, replaced with billboards" was a fair perception. Keep in mind I went into this hoping to be pleasently surprised ... looking to be a future customer.

Ok time to take a fresh look ... Ok cool they have this Daz Studio thing ... hmm its free (and yes oviously set up well to sell models ... but hey thats just business ... give something get something in return ... hmmm ... maybe thes guys aren't what it seemed they were).

So I download the software (dont really need it but thought it miight be cool to check out the renderer) ... Ok make sure Im logged in and registered ... ok good to go

So fire off the installer hoping to get a good feel about the company and then .... BLAM ... in ur face. (See below ... U cant install the FREE software unless U PROMISE to tell two OTHER people ABOUT DAZ).

Can u belive that ... The FREE software wouldnt install unless checked the agree box.

Ill tell u one thing Im am sooo mad right now I cant stand it ... I hope eovia got alot of money. But if Daz starts pulling this kinda thing as the months go on ahead with our beloved Carrera and Hex. I will no longer be a customer. Daz better get smart and realize that dealing with artists and creative people requires treating customers like they have a frigging brain.

Man Im sooo angry.

They make u promise "site unseen" ... the frigging software is not free ... its free marketing for Daz, Its cheap, its annoying and its just plain GREEDY.

The tell 2 friends doesn't seem to be to much to ask for FREE software. Besides it doesn't state that what you tell 2 people has to be possitive. If you don't like the software tell them that. In fact since this is your second response to the email go ahead and check the box.

Sorry Otaku (tho I appreciate the reply) ... U dont advertise that something is FREE and then place marketing requirements on it after the customer has downlaoded it and is installing it. What u do is advertise it as "Tell-A-Friend-Ware" or whatever. Otherwise its deceptive and selfish (the bad kind).

Come on!! Are they going to sue you for not telling two friends? It's only a common marketing ploy to give you a bit of "guilt" if you don't.

It's is really no big deal at all. I can understand DAZ using this ploy to promote their products, after all, all these companies are obviously in it for profit.

The BIG question is how and what are they going to do with Carrara and Hexagon. That is where I am concerned. I feel kind of betrayed by Eovia (I just bought Hexagon 2 and now it is a DAZ product). But then again Eovia was in it for the money.

I have not been impressed with what DAZ has done with Bryce at all so I feel there is strong reason for concern, however, I am going to wait and see what happens. I have to do at least that as these are two of my favorite applications. I'm going to wait and see what happens.

what's the big deal? it's freeware, er, no it's tellware.... and you just told 2 (thousand) people.... besides I don't remember seeing a time frame with this, you may be allowed to take 40 years to tell 2 people.

hehe, there are some real big problems in this world, and this ain't one of them.

besides, you could also tell your mother in law and a dead uncle next time you visit the cemetary ;-)

As far as I am concerned DAZ is making Bryce die a slow death. My fear is that DAZ will dedicate resources to make Carrara compatible with Daz Studio.

it's already done - fbx

the slow death on Bryce is not from Daz, that was Corel

Thx for the humorous reply Staig . Made me smile. I preordered Hex (a few weeks ago) amd am still looking forward to it (though less hopefull about the future). Just kinda sad I guess .... things were looking up, Carrera was doing great, Hex came out and blew me away, Hex 2 looks like it will be the same.

Eovia cared enuf about us to get a contract to get hex thru 2.1. I mean think about it ... If u bought eovia ... wouldnt u be willing to at least commit to 3.0 (4.0 5.0 6.0?? ... its a no brainer) on an app thats getting EVERYONES attention in the CG world.

"Nope sorry well only contract to a point release (2.1) on a version due out in the next few days?" Thats supposed to be comforting? A method to show u care?

Scary I tell ya ... If I was Daz (or there leader etc) I'd be on these forums Introducing myself and seriously doing every thing I could to keep the users/customers comforted that our invetment in these software programs will be rewarded. But nope ... not one peep.

Dan

The Corel Bryce was decent. Corel added a tree editor and a few other things. Daz added the stupid Daz Studio support but the stability took a big hit from what I have read and the net work rendering also took a hit. Bryce 5.5 was a joke in the CG world. Bryce 5.0 from Corel was OK.

If Eovia sold out to Curious Labs I could deal with it but DAZ? Where do I file my complaint.

Are most of you upset about the sale of Eovia because Daz bought them?

Its not about being sued . Its about making a promise. Its about honor. And asking for honor ... without showing any. For me the contrast is obvious.

Asking for honor (benefits the asker) ... w/o giving honor (detrimental to the receiver of the request) ... is a double dose something not so good.

I am with you in this statement: honor for the promise ....the value of the words

in the post of date release i delete all my posts after i saw your new post trying to be positive but now.......the new information about DAZ and Eovia plus the silent of Thomas is a very bad sign respect the release.

Dude, Thomas is a very rich young man and in the process of developing his own company. With his multiple talents, I wouldn't be surprised. So he couldn't care less whether Eovia was bought by Yahoo or Alta Vista.

I now it is not wise to sound negative but Daz Studio, Mimic and Bryce are all flops. I am not sure about what Daz will honor I just haved not been impressed thus far. I will hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Carrara 6 may not mature as we had hoped. I may have to look at XSI or even TS again. Only time will tell.

It's all like a restaurant with the bad food, you know, but since alcoholic beverages sales are going fine (=poser models and props), who cares if food sux, profit is there

Well, at least DAZ knows how unhappy many people here are about the deal. Like I said the test will be C6. If they will screw again with this one just like what they did with Bryce...

I've been looking at Blender. Not because it's free, but because it's the most active in terms of development. Blender is actually every commercial package's nightmare. CG forums accommodate it in some special status. The only drawback is it's UI. But I have gone past a little bit with that and could actually model in it. My biggest gripe is its handling of ngons. Since I will have Hexagon 2, modeling will be no problem.

I really like Carrara's shaders workflow and would like to see more development in its other areas just for having the thought that tools are there to be tapped. Well, let's just see what happens...

This is sad news, let me explain my feeling.

I want 3d software for making content, so what will happen if the company itself sells the content and the 3d software? I think the weight of the program shifts to just doing that, being good at using the purchased content. What did they do with Bryce and did you see the update price.

And the following remark does not make me feel any better. (I have pre-ordered HEX2!)

"P.S. For those of you who have not pre-ordered Hex2 don't do it yet.
There is some additional news that you should hear before you do."

This was posted by Dan Farr from DAZ over at Renderosity Poser forum in
response to some of the concerns regarding the announcements.

Thanks for doing this for your (ex)customers EOVIA! I have invested a lot of
money in EOVIA
software (Carrara 1,2,3,4pro and 5pro, Amapi 6 and 7designer, Hexagon 1 and 2)

Now you dump me and your software on the sidewalk of this content giant.

Feel free to comment on this EOVIA!
