Puke Howto split one single shape?

Guys,

I am wondering if there any simple way to split one shape which I have created, e.g. some cylinder, on few portions, e.g. top part of this cylinder - one shape, middle part - another, etc.?
Cheers,
Alex.

I am not sure of the exact effect you are trying to get.

Have you tried selecting the sections (sets of polygons) one at at time and using the disassociate tool? You can then move the section away from the original mesh. This method keeps it part of the same object.

If you want them to be separate objects you can the select the sections one at a time, then cut and paste them back in. They will then be separate objects.

Does that help?

Probably the cut/past is what I need. Reason I need it is: I'd like to apply different material and texture for each part of one shape. Is there any other way I can use to get it?

select the polys you want(middle) and make a separate shading domain. Then you can apply different materials for each domain.

Ahhh, OK, that was the part I wasn't sure of.

And yup, for setting materials, do as Grendel says.
