Puke A partial smooth. Howto?

I have a question: if it possible to apply a smooth for part of one object?
E.g. we have got a cylinder with 8 sides (like octahedrons), and I whish to apply some smooth for just one end.
So in result I should have some shape which has started from a great octahedrons and then smoothly going to another end as a perfect cylinder.
Any suggestions?
Cheers.

on the end you want to keep a cylinder, I would add a chamfer with a rayon of 0.

That way when you add smoothing it will keep that end flat.

When Hex2 comes out you can just use edge creasing
