Modo 201 does look good after checking some still samples in there. The renders look stunning and realistic. The people behind it must be taking it very seriously. It's, indeed, tempting. This is probably a make or break thing for Eovia. Unless C6 is significantly better than C5, I'm afraid some will jump ship. I mean when are ALL these feature requests be implemented? As far as C7, C8, C9? When?

I don't think I'm wrong im saying that these new features being displayed for Modo 201 are a serious warning shot for all other competing programs. My problem is that it will take a long time for Modo to have animation. It's not just the quality of the renders either. If you watch the demo videos it shows awesome material editing that all others will have to be judged against.

As with any of these programs the question is...how can you achieve your goal in the most afforadble and effcient manor. ZBrush is also a good program, but the learning curve is higher. While Modo looks to be a good program, you have to base your purchase on what you want to accoplish. Lightwave, 3DS Max, and Maya, are great too, but does your goal warrent the cost. I look at each purchase from this perspective, and I recommend trying out demos of any program you plan on buying. Pick the one that works for you, personally I like the ease of use and small learning curve, that Hex provides. I use several utilities to model, map, and paint a model. For me, Hex2 looks like the most bang for the buck and I look forward to UV unwrapping! While some programs may have all the bells and whistles, the question remains, how much of that will you actually use in a practical application and will it justify spending the money. For this reason, I don't think Silo, Hex or other programs need to fear progress. It helps us all when they are motivated towards improving, as the advances of Hex2 prove.

I don't see a lot of C5 users jumping ship to Modo. Modo is a great modeler and it will have materials and rendering. But, it does not have terrain generation, plant and tree creator, volumetric clouds, Poser import, etc. Hex 2 and Carrara 5 Pro together offer a whole lot for the money, and getting better all the time.

Yes, my views have changed about Modo. I've tried it quite extensively now. I can't justify the cost when Hex can do a whole lot and I'm using Wings 3D. Modo can do just about everything but I'm not sure the workflow is really that easy after all. I also found a few problems. I don't know the reason, possibly bugs, but one problem with messed around normal directions was exactly a problem I experienced in Lightwave which tells me it was not my doing.

Modo is too expensive for what you get, in my opinion. There are far to many modeling aps out there. Crowded competition. Hexagon is really good value for the money, and its so simple to learn. I am somewhat surpriced that nobody is picking up the competition on animation packages, like Messiah though. I mean Motion Builder is tooo expensive ? There is FBX support in Carrara but who uses M.builder and then render in Carrara? My guess is very few. And now Hexagon is supporting disp.creating. Isnt displacement maps orgin usage for animation? I maybe off topic here.. I just would have loved Evoia to have made an animation package in "hexagon style". Easy and efficient and not super expensive. |
