Carrara Pro 4 is good for general animation, but not for character animation. It's a challenge to synchronize the voice of a character to the sound files in Carrara. Animation Master seems to do this much better. |

Hum.. AM is a full Spline modeler (and the best I tried...) but it's not working with polygones (well, you can import them if I remmeber with the OBJ, but don't use AM to modify them...) Well, I didn't test it since AM 2000, perhaps it changed a lot.... My only regret was it was too much unstable (a full crash every 2 minutes..) |

Although I haven't done this in a long while... I've worked with A:M on a number of occasions, but it never became my "primary" 3D app. You can import 3DS and (I beleive) OBJ files into A:M, and a number of people have done it (including myself). Wings3D (a open source poly modeler) supports A:M directly with an A:M file export facility. The problems with doing this are twofold: one is that file sizes can get pretty out of hand and your model may not be as easy to manipulate as if it were created with splines once imported. There was a long thread on the A:M forum recently about working with LW and A:M. Apparently there's a number of LW users that aren't happy with LW's character animation tools and are using A:M strictly for creating the movements and then exporting that info back into LW for the final render. Compared to some of the other apps and plugins out there, I guess $299 (the cost of A:M) isn't too bad to someone using LW. A:M also has -very- nice hair generation tools. But, at least in my opinion, the modeler works a bit differently and it's renderer is just so-so. I did an animated "Mr. 7-Eleven" a long while back for the Sounthland Corp. (there's a tiny still on my website). I modeled in 3DS and animated in A:M. Not seamless, but it worked. ... oh, one more thing: if you ask Hash about a demo version, they'll tell you that they have a 30 day money back guarantee. ... and one more thing, if you didn't know this already. A:M is copy protected. You -have- to have the app's CD running on your computer to run it. This got to be a major hassle when I was trying to pull other material of CD-ROMs. Hope this helps, Paul |

Recently I bought A:M, but now I am too busy with Amapi to learn A:M... If I could work in A:M, I really would like to try it out for you. But I noticed that this is a very old thread - don't know if you already know the answer... Jacqueline |

You might also want to search the Hash forum for the threads on using Lightwave and Wings with A:M. They're not Amapi, but since they're polygonal modelers they'll have some things in common with Amapi. Incidently, one way of getting better file format translations (at least so I'm told) is to import into Wings3D and then export as a A:M file. Since Wings3D is free, it's worth a try... Paul |
