Where do I start

I am new to 3d modeling so will probably ask lots of stupid questions please bear with me.
I want to try to model a female head based on pics of a family member. I have front and side photos and have them in carrara as reference.
I assume I start with a box with 4 secments on each side and add lines of vertices for the major features. My question is how many and where. Tip of the nose, center of the eyes, etc. Vertical and horizontal.
Any help will be much appreicated.
Thanks

There are plenty of box modeling tutorial, check the forum and you will find some links, start there and then go from there.

Good thread.
If I may add some other questions here (which I think are relevant to the original question)...
  • Is box modeling possible in Carrara?
  • Is it possible to have reference images on the left, right and bottom background to use as guides for modeling?

These are things I haven't attempted in Carrara.
I know these threads are no longer about software programs, but only about techniques.... but... it may be that some "techniques" are more easily implemented in certain software, so maybe it could be permitted to mention some software when it relates to the technique being discussed?

For instance, some of the "techniques" done in (for instance, ZBrush) are not techniques you could do in (for instance, MOI) - so, it seems that there may be occasion that a technique may have to mention a software that would implement that technique?

You can box modeling in Carrara, but is a little bit more trickier. You have to use vertex object.

Here is a good book that is helping me a lot. It answers both of your questions.
Carrara 5 Pro Handbook (Graphics Series) (Paperback) by Mike de la Flor (Author)
I got my copy at amazon but I imagine any good book store might carry it.
