Modelling a die

Hello, Hexers.
I am wondering about the best way to model a die. Examining them led me to the conclusion that dice are more like balls with cut-off edges than cubes. Trying to make that work though, I end up with dice far too soft-edged.
Maybe one of you has got an idea, how to create realistic looking dice a better way? Or maybe even a tutorial?
Thanks a lot!

first create a cube, and since we will need 6 areas for dots, each with a center point, we will tessellate 13 times
then we can just select the center point for each dot and move it in towards the center of the die.

once all the points have been moved to create the dimples, all we need to do is smooth 1 or 2 times.

see screen caps

hope this helps

That's not the kind of die I'm looking for - I try to do the smoothed version. However, your trick with the tesselation was an excellent idea that I will keep in mind for future use, thanks a lot!

Thank you - a very beautiful and clean model. Do you remember how you made those smooth corners? I guess your model is not free for commercial use, is it?

Nope, I really do not remember, but it is relatively simple geometry, I doubt it would take you long time to figure it out...

You can see in my video how I modeled domino which has similar geometry (dimples). Sometimes is necessary to do lil' bit of planing before modeling to figure out which would be the most efficient and elegant geometry for given model...

Here is the link for the video:

http://forums.polyloop.net/misc-tuto...ilo-1-4-a.html

All of my models are without any restrictions whatsoever, you can do whatever you want with it except calling it your own

the new link works fine E-Z

you should have created nine cylinders to create the spots this would allow you to create all the faces one thru siix using the rotate tool and selective deleting of spots.

no worries actually you dont need to rotate anything, just use copy on support on a tess 2 cube, ungroup the spheres or cylinders and delete as needed then regroup and boolean, then chamfer the cube.

Here is another tip
1:use Wire Frame to see what your doing when centering or resizing.

2:Lock the Cube so you don't accidentally select it when your copying on support.

ok you dont need to lock anything to copy on support and you are eyeballing the clones E-Z not very precise

heres how i would create the die.
click and drag the cube into the workspace, set tess to 2 in the properties box and click in the workspace to validate.
click and drag the sphere into the workspace, just drag it anywhere and scale using the universal manipulator.
select copy on support and click on the cube and hit validate.
delete the original sphere.

ungroup the new group in the scene tree and delete all unwanted spheres.
regroup them by hiding the cube and selecting all.
unhide and boolean the cube.
then chamfer.
it sounds like more work than it is
