From your screen caps I would suspect a model like that could be only a few hundred k tops unless it was an imported .obj, in which case it would be heavily triangulated. The only other thing I would suspect is you are working the model with textures. It is always preferred to texture last.

I would recreate the entire thing in Hex and ditch the file from your other modeler. It may seem like a lot more work, but in all truth you need to learn the program now more than you need to output a final model.

Yes it was a obj exported from bryce6 originally exported as a 3ds from anim8or doesnt have textures(just mats) bryce5&6 wont import textured 3ds after v4. Mmm that is a intimidating suggestion considering my noobness with hex2. I need more experience in hex first.
i'll tackle that idea soon,
Thanks

No need to be intimidated or nervous, be excited instead. Why don't you tackle Grendels Camera tutorial here on Polyloop in Hex first and then come back to the ship.
Once you get comfortable with the tools and how they work together you'll see Hex is far superior to any other modeler you are used to and you won't need to import models for editing. You'll be able to make a ship like that in a single sitting, an hour or two maybe.
