Holy Crap!!! Some of those new tools in ZB3 are completely amazing. Pixo never fails to impress. I think everybody is going to forgive them for being late on ZB3 when they realize it is worthy of being ZB4... Pixolator's description clearly mentions 1,000,000,000 polygons . Is that onscreen in the total scene, or for just one mesh? either way, it's incredible. And the vid clearly showed a 3D perspective camera. I think it's fair to say that ZB will be king again. I might need to demo ZB (for the 5th time) when a ZB3 demo is available...

Yup, there's nothing better than the original. When I get into sculpting, I'll go for Zbrush, end of story. Patience is all I need to decipher Zbrush's strange UI.

I didn't see offhand, but I wonder if you get Zbrush 2 now if they'll give you the free upgrade still?

I would imagine so. That's been the deal for the last 2 years. I can't see why they would recall the offer. I think Pixo will make a big push to get a lot of orders in before the release, when the price (i assume) will finally be increased. This is becoming a pretty common tactic these days, pressure people into those pre-orders to avoid kicking yourself later for not buying early... Of course, people could have bought into ZB 2 years ago under the same pressure to beat the ZB 2.5 deadline

Pixologic has an almost unreal upgrade policy. There are folks who took the original upgrade offer from 1.X to 2.0 are still getting 3.0 as a free upgrade! Nuts, but beautiful. Although at $489 (or less) this app must sell like hotcakes; as a market leader/definer and a contributor to a 2007 academy award, why not reward your early adopters? I'm in the wait for this upgrade, should be a fun May/June.

"The upgrade to version 3 will be free of charge to all registered users (including new users who will register before the next release)." according to the note from Pixolater

Well that's a pretty stellar deal for anyone who got version 1, I guess despite the fact they've had to wait so long. I liked what he said about some things looking good on paper but ended up just being "features" and they dumped them. I don't like bloated software for the sake of just having stuff, it should all make sense and be rellevant as much as possible.

About that version 3 demo vid....

Every time I watch the demo for version 3 I sit on the edge of my seat and get blown away all over again.
  • What is that part where the (poly?) appears to get sucked onto the face/head model... like a vacuum mold... is it a retopo ... whatever it is it is pretty cool
  • Then, there is the projection onto a cube of front, side sketches for reference and then spinning it around while sculpting the model...????
Are these actually sculpting processes or just fancy film work?

Probably about a zillion questions .... it sure seems worth looking at.

Surface texture painting right on the model is something that Hex has tried... mostly in other apps it is always a big pain....

Zbrush might be tough to learn and it remains to be seen whether I can ever live with the interface and the workflow, but I gotta give it another go.... I may end up in an asylum... but it will be fun and maybe even worth the effort if I can conquer it....

Has anyone seen anything about the pricing of 3 if you are not upgrading?

No, but I've decided to get it before it comes out and jumps up a couple hundred or more bucks.

It's a gamble, I don't like preordering things, but I liked what the guy said and it stuck with me,...
"During this process, we have refined, tested, and refined again every feature. We have also scrapped features that looked great 'on paper', but in practice were just "another feature" which - although increasing the number of features - did little to get us closer to our goal."

It jumped a fair amount between 1.5 and 2 so I would expect the same again but no official word yet. I do think they mentioned the price upgrade before 2 came out though. That gave folks a chance to get on board.

I missed out but since getting Z2 I have not regretted it although it took a while to get my head round it. Z3 looks stunning.

Cheers

Yes got mine too, still playing with all the new shiney knobs and things. Crap navigation still in the interface, though some people like it with a tablet. Much prefer the straitforward interface and simple functionality of Mudbox, but some of the features (painting) and power of Zbrush still make it number one on the block.

Programme looks a little underdone still and I wonder if it was bought out early (if you can call three years early) and free, to stop the drain off to mudbox. Some basic crashes when flipping between UI's seems a bit amateur really although they promising a patch shortly.

Looking forward to Mudboxs answer later in the year.

What a great time to be a 3D modeller, trouble is the time you have to put in to learning new stuff, but what a pleasure it is too.

I think you may be right about that...it crossed my mind too.
that would explain why they have been silent about the Mac version of ZB3. (Mudbox is not avaliable on Mac, so us Mac users are not moving over to Muddox)

From what I have read on the ZB forums ZB3 seems to be missing a few things, like zaplink and some other painting/texturing features.

at least ZB2 still rocks

I guess I'll just sit and wait for my Mac version, like a good little boy
