Which part is your question?

Hexagon help documentation (help in menu at top)
page 281, under "2: The Scene Properties Tab."
6th bullet down in the paragraph shows this process.
Works like this....
  • Click the little "..." to the side of the grid you want to put your image on, select the image from your drive
  • check the little box to make the image appear
  • un-check the box to have the grid
  • box checked = picture
  • box unchecked = grid.

For this kind of modeling, edge modeling or boxmodeling (try to do a search first, you will find some answer I think!)

Lets see a screen cap of your properties panel and workspace.

Check and make sure the image isn't 25 megabytes or anything like that too eh? ;)

Try Squaring the image (I made this one 500x500) and reset your preferences if you have to. Sometimes they can stick.

I use materials to put my image on a plane sized appropriately for the image I am using. I can then control its transparency, quickly turn it on an off, and position it where I want.

The cool thing with that method i use for a while is that you can have an unlimited number of blueprints, instead of being stuck with the traditional 3 references images using in background.

Having front/rear, and top/bottom views is no more a problem. you can also create several sets of blueprints, some with all the internal parts, the others with all the external parts for example. You group them by type, and hide/unhide them when needed
