Hi Carrozza,

Magic is no fun once you understand the trick. ;-)

This is still a work in progress...I did all domains and mapping in Carrara in this project. But sometimes, I do it all in Hexagon.

Carrara and Hex both have good UV mapping tools - different but good. In this instance I chose to use Carrara's because of the visual feedback and the kind of texture tools I was using. For sections like the roof on the turrets, I wanted the shingles to each be on their own plane with little distortion. This gave me the ability to control brick and shingle size more accurately.

So, I created a separate shading domain for each flat plane or detail area on the structure. Then, in the case of the roof on the turret, I used Carrara's UV mapping tools to select the type of mapping (planer with no splits in this case) and then adjust the vertexes on the geometry by grabbing them and moving them into the precise locations I wanted.

It's not hard but does take some time... :-P

Mark

Thanks Mark "Copperfield" Bremmer!

I am asking a lot about UV mapping around the forums because I find difficulties in the passage from modelling stage to texturing stage.

It's just so unnatural to wrap a planar image on a 3D model without distortions... uff!

The time I spend on scene builds usually breaks down to something like this:

Modeling = 25%
Texturing = 60%
Lighting = 15%

Good texturing simply takes time. :-/

nice to see your site back up Mark, thanks for the link

for me its:
modeling = 20%
texturing= 60%
lighting=20%

im seeing more and more UVmapping questions so maybe its time we had a forum devoted to that subject, ill ask.
UV mapping is key when you start a build,you need to think about seams ,distortion, groups all sorts of things before you even start building a mesh.

A section devoted to UV would be sweet.

I think we could also have a few "basic" models in the free section where people can practice on some simple stuff first. Then if/when someone has a UV question we can all refer to the same model. Maybe we could just use your basic head and torso, Stu

After people have learned to UV your basic head, they can play with one of H2's BEST features.... Displacement painting

For those of you that are looking for a program that you can build houses with, I recommend "3D Home Architect Home Design Deluxe 6". It is for building houses up to 3 stories. Since it is a deluxe edition, it also includes tools for yard design as well.

http://store.purplus.net/3dhoarhodede.html

The good part is that version 6 has 3DS file export - so you can design & export the house, yard items (fences and yard things) and anything else you design. The earlier versions do not have file export.

PURPUS (www.purplus.net) now has the program for $14.95 - I payed $50 for it. Can't loose for that price.

Thanks for the link. For some reason I can't order it though. Maybe it's out of stock.

I recommend Floorplan 3D (now ver. 11) from IMSI
exports perfectly to Carrara (objects and color, not textures)
Renders well on its own
Easy to use, fast
Better than sketchup (free version)

Doug

I have version 10 and I'm okay with it, although I wish Carrara would import dxf natively (VM) and not have to convert a thousand objects to UV map them. Maybe CadStyle will get an update this year or next. Anyway, the price is right, 10-15 bucks on purplus and interiors are a snap with it too. I'm just laying out a basic houseplan now and will do the detail work around it in Hex like balconies and fences and furniture and stuff.

Patrick,

I've got that 3D World issue. Bought it mainly for the Arch pre-vis supplement. Wonderful! Spine3D's cover shot really is excellent. Let us know how it goes.

Maybe it would be best if we can list the cheap archi-tools that works well with Carrara - many of them claim 3d output export, but I tried few of them and the result was terrible, millions of polygons, holes were not holes etc...

So you saying Floorplan 3D export fine?

I was working with Sketchup before and it was a joy for architecture - a perfect app for that kind of think IMHO.

I use floorplan10 and it's okay for less than half the price of archi-tools. (what do you want for 15-30 bucks? ;) Importing dxf files to C5-Pro (you need cadstyle only in pro I think) will result in all large triangles, but there is no avoiding it and no option to import as vertex models like hex does. That said, it's not too bad cleaning them up in the VM. What I've found recently is that I like to just make the basic house and doors/windows in floorplan and delete the doors and windows in Carrara and do all that detail work again in hex. Assemble that and you're good to go. I'm still looking forward to a better developed bridge between Cad and Carrara or perhaps Hex/Amapi or some such because I think there would be some great opportunity there for a lot of folks.

Oh, P.S. the free sketchup won't port to Carrara I don't think and I bet the real version would be nice, but its 495.00 or something...

Well now I know I need a tutorial, even a basic one will do. Everything I have exported so far has pieces missing. So Mark any chance of a small intro tutorial to your techniques building a house?

Cheers
