Problem with Flat Surfaces

Hi All

What is the best way to construction flat panels which have bevel edges. From my screen shot you can see a simple example, but you'll notice that the reflection in the flat side is wrong.

I have tried various way of building this and used the various triangulation tools but I always end up with similar problems.

In my previous modeller (nurbs base), it was something that you didn't worry about!

Any help would be appreciated

Robert

The problem is you have started with one big n-gon ( a facet with more than 4 sides ). You should create your initial shape using only tris or quads. n-gons do not render properly, which is what you are seeing even in the openGL preview. This is a simple shape and there are various ways to go about starting it.

Thank you for the advice.

I have had another go with this examble and I am getting a better surface. There are still reflections issues where the triangles are long and thin but it is better.

The problem is that it all seems to be a lot effort to get a simple extrude surface. Something that has been the basic building block for me in 3d for the last ten years! I guess it just me trying to get my head around this new way of modelling with sub-division.

Cheers

Robert

You need to think in simpler terms with this. Try to make the shapes with less complication. Here's how I would approach this.

Hi

Thanks again for the advice.

I guess I just need more practice - funny enough it is the simple things in Sub Divison modelling that give me the biggest headaches. I guess I have never had to think about how best to trangulate a shape before - it was always done for me!

Cheers

Robert
