New York 1660 in 3D.

Hello ...

This is the first forum where I am testing the waters.

I would like to ask people with 3D software, too much time, and who like history to join me in an open project that has the aim to reconstruct New York (New Amsterdam) as it might have looked like in the year 1660.

Why 1660 ? At that time it was still in Dutch hands and a famous map of the city was published in Europe. The map shows a number of locations that could make beautiful historical scenes.

New York was burned down by the British in 1776, destroying all but a few historical building, pictures and paintings. Fortunately, many of the official documents had copies in Amsterdam & London, so not all of history was lost.

Anyway, ... please visit my website, and tell me if you like this initiative.
If so, I will extend the website with a forum and a database for objects.

http://NY1660.3dhistory.nl

Wow sounds interesting.
Unfortunately I have nearly no time at the moment. So I won't join. But it sounds really interesting.

Do you supply architectural period references or do we have research ourselves? Are there poly count limits per structure, what format? I may be able to contribute.

I am a Dutch national (living in Montreal), so naturally I have better access to historial reference materials from the Netherlands & Belgium.

I will set up a library of pictures from Dutch 17th century buildings. The few New Amsterdam pictures that are online show typically Dutch looking buildings, though they might have used more wood than stones.

As the website progresses, I will ask Dutch & Belgians if they can make pictures of local 17th century buildings, this will also help with the textures.

Edit: Dutch looking houses were built all over Northern Europe. If you see an old one in Germany, Poland or Scandinavia, please send me a picture.

People most likely will like to create their own scenes, but share objects, or work in small groups to help each other? However, we could think about a low poly virtual map visitors could walk through. I will set up a forum where visitors can discuss the options.

Next year summer will be big party time in New York: 400 year discovery by Hudson.
I hope with this project we can participate.

Hmmm, sounds interesting.
Could stimulate me to do something serious with all my software :-)
I live in Groningen, the Netherlands and I could at least provide fotographs from dutch buildings. Please tell me what you are looking for. Only those wooden buildings we don't have anymore in The Netherlands. But old stone buildings plenty of course.
Keep me posted.

This is the kind of buildings we are looking for ...

I don't know if the picture is original, but it looks good.

Please, take a look at http://sketchup.google.com
I am starting a SketchUp library for historical components we could use to create buildings.
I started with the window-frames you see in this picture.

The company next door where I work can convert sketchup models into 3ds, or obj models.

Other objects I will make with Hex2. As for the persons in the scenes, I think we will need some help from Daz people.

I am trying to configure a forum in my website for further discussions.

For me too, it's an after-hour hobby project.

They would have had those buildings at that location in that year?

Yes, the city was founded in 1626. They had about 30-40 years to build them before the map was released. Most of the houses were drinking establishments, because alcohol was not allowed in the New England colonies.

It seems there was quite a lot of boat traffic between the colonies. In 1664, almost half the people in New Amsterdam were British or 'Pirates'.

Edit: New York didn't change a lot

Trapgevel

Something like this. ( hope the photo comes along)
But much of this architecture is, as I saw in wikepedia, is from the 17th century.
But I'm happy to make some pictures here to find out what is what.
