Looking good.

Run Vista 64bit if you can, you get about a 30 percent increase in render speed above Windows XP 32 bit.

Thanks...

I'm thinking about that.
Would Windows XP64 pro be better than Vista?
I keep hearing that Vista is a bit flakey and that it would use a gig just to run the OS... ???

Windows XP 64 bit is based on Windows 2003 architecture.

You will be able to access more ram, but it will still give the same problems with some older 32 bit apps and it won't run old 16 bit apps from Win 98/ME days.

You won't be able to access DOS, if that's important to you.

If your software supports Vista, I don't see any reason why not to upgrade.

One can always dual boot in different partitions I suppose.

Sounds good for your new workhorse !
As for XP 64 vs Vista 64 i couldn't do more than tell you to go for XP64 which will be more compatible with actual programs and drivers and is more reactive than Vista 64.

Cheers,

Thanks friends for the words and advice.

I am taking a close look at the op system for this.
This system was based on the one that Vimmy on the French side has (that is his work in the top banner, second from left).

I asked him which op sys he used - below is his reply and a question that I just posted for him... perhaps someone has input about this???....

Thanks.
Is your Western Digital Raptor a SATA type drive?
(maybe they all are)

I have read of incompatibility problems between the WD SATA drives and Windows XP64... apparently you have not had this problem??

EDIT - Vimmy replied that he has no problems with the HD and XP64.

Thanks again for all the info.
I have ordered the computer system and am considering Windows XP64 pro
I have ordered two sticks of 2gig ram... which I think will still work fine even under the 32 bit Windows XP pro. I would much rather go to the 64 bit OS.

hi,

32bit xp afaik, can only access 2GB ram, there is something called the 3 gig switch, which allows it to access upto 3BG ram, but not all 4, only 64bit xp and vista can access 4GB or more...

i am running vista ultimate 64bit and have had very few problems with running software. i only have 1 driver that does not work, and i have a lot connected or installed on my computer, and the company do not make a vista 64 driver for the device.. so im dual booting with xp.

to me 64bit is the way to go, soon all pcs will have to be 64bit to keep up, xsi and lightwave have 64bit versions of their software as do a few others.

just my tuppence worth..

I'm going to the 64bit.
The only device I'm concerned about is my old wacom pen tablet (intuous 2).
Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get a new one... have had mine for 10 years or more. They have 64bit drivers for usb connected tablets, but mine is a serial hookup.
