Free web hosting?

Do any of you use a free web hosting service? If so, how do you like it?

Can yo be more explicit about what you are looking for? Just a hosting to put what you want on it, like a blog or a website, or something more specific?
Just a personal opinion, but now, I can't go back to free hosting and stuff like that. I prefer a lot having a professional hosting (I don't mean a dedicated server like Polyloop, it's very hard to handle..), you have more ressources for your needs.
You can find some pay hosting for 10 bucks a year (more is better with good services (like domain name included, SQL database, etc... no advertising or popups!)

I am working on a website for a friend and I was going to put up a website for myself with my resume and a few samples. Nothing real major.

ahh, I would suggest Lunarpages

www.lunarpages.com they are not free....about $100 per year(for a shared server plan), and cheaper if you go for a 2 year plan. you can host up to 10 sites under one plan. I think you get a free domain, but I would register the domains myself because, if you get the free one they actually "own" the name.

I host about 45 sites with them and the speed and uptime are about the best around. plus you get a bunch of Coffee Cup software, if you need it.

you and your friend could shell out 50 bucks each and have a years worth of hosting. then when you get new clients, you can just add them on to your plan, and get to work. no money out of pocket.

best of luck

Thanks for the info. I have done some work on the hard drive. Is it easy to upload FrontPage and DreamWeaver sites to this server?

Yes. I think they have some sort of "Front Page" options thet make it easier.
I would suggest using only Dreamweaver though... it's HTML is much cleaner.

It's just like with any other server. you setup your remote server info in Dreamweaver, and click upload. you will have a set of files on your HD and the live files will be on the server. after your site is up you only need to update individual flies as needed.

they also have a control panel (cpanelX) which is where you create email accounts, get stats, cron jobs MySQL administration etc.

their forums are good too
www.lunarforums.com
thats where you can get most of your questions answered.
You can create an account on their forum whether you use them or not.

there are many webhost that offer good service, so just look around
I also use GoDaddy for one of my clients... its a dedicated server...$3K per year.

I think you can take it with you, not 100% sure:

LunarPages rocks, been with them for little bit over 2 years, great plans and excellent service...I have THIS plan with them, and I think that $7 a month is very cheap for such a reliable service

I use these guys, very reliable and inexpensive with lots of feature for a low price. You can host a number of you and your friend's sites for very little per month.

Steama: on my side, I was very unhappy with 1and1 (the first dedicated server for Eovia3D.net was hosted at 1and1).
Low price, but poor service, technical support and commercial support (3 weks for an answer for a server, it's crazy how unprofessional it is...) really suck...

I have been using http://www.fatcow.com for over 5 years now and they get better each year. Right now they have their service for only $88 a years. Which includes 300 GB of online storage. I have not come close to filling it up and I have been running 3 website off the same package.

Tech service is great also... always came through for me when I needed them.

I've been using "addr.com" for about 6 yrs now. No complaints though I pay about $8/month. After reading some of the responses here I may need to check out some of the lower cost plans.

I have been using Strato (in Europe) here, they have very cheap packages and great offers. Paid 30 or 40 euroos for two years including the domain name. Their service is great and support very helpful. Included was also GoLive CS2 and Photoshop Elements 5!
