Some Forum suggestions

Although this forum is a wonderfull place of enlightenment and tolerance, there are some topics that make my eyes glaze over, and some that seem to set people off to rant on their favourite hobby horse. So I thought if they could be diverted to a little pool of frustration it might leave the other groups to be free to be constructive, helpfull, and reasoned.

So I have some suggestions for some new discussion groups

My software/OS/hardware is better than your software/OS/hardware (Yes, I borrowed this from the modo site)
This new software shouldnt have any bugs
I hate X company because of Y
When will new software/update be released

Tony

I agree somehow with you, and these kind of thread seems to be more succesfull by the tons of comments they gather than the WIP section .
This is why the new forum organisation should provide some fresh air, and decrease the number of threads of that kind (i hope)

Forums all across the Internet in every field or interest are maybe 50/50 productive (question/answer) type stuff and wandering discussions and wild speculations and off-topic stuff. Everyone has opinions and expressing them helps people learn about the software and community. In addition it's a good way to get to know each other too. I'd rather see these wandering off-topic discussions than the old days of bashing, extreme arguments, foul manners and so forth. I checked out that forum on Modo and it has something like 5 posts, which tells me it wasn't designed to be taken seriously. It's more of a reminder to people that's there's a place to take arguments and that the main forum is a place to say what's on your mind, but to play nice and be fair and open minded about people's views, opinions, beliefs etc..
My eyes glaze over too and sometimes even at my own posts, but it is what it is and we learn from own experience as well as the experience of others.

I think this forum is one of the best 3D forums around with some of the best people, personalities and skills and to be honest; I'd be bored stiff if it were all about poly's and pixels only and I get a kick out of reading people's views, even if they're goofy. There's no rule saying people have to post or subscribe to any thread so when you see one that makes your eyes glaze over, my advice is just to sit on your hands, don't respond and it will go away soon enough.

Yes, I was being a bit reckless I suppose, it is a good post you make Couerl and Pete. And I suppose no one ever starts a thread with these topics.

Have we met?

Caligari has a rants 'n raves forum which seems to help keep things civilized. Kind of like your idea, which I think isn't a bad one.

There's a lot of debate on these forums, but it doesn't seem to get too nasty, at least compared to some other places. Cgtalk is much worse at times. That said, some of the arguments there are educational as well.

I think the "my app rules yours sucks" stuff is inevitable and it doesn't have to get personal.

Cool, good idea. A little like sterilization but not a bad idea at all IMHO. The idea certainly is not censorship and even makes everything more appropriately catagorized to suit the users wishes better.

This is a well thought solution that could increase the enjoyment of everyone. Then again does Polyloop really need to do this at all?

Peace,
Stan
