Inspiration

Many times I have 'modeler's block' and I can't think of what to model. I've gone for 4 hours once just staring at the blank screen. I try browsing the net for inspiration, but I never know what to look for. Does anyone care to share how they come up with the things you make?

Draw a line or enter a cube, make an "alteration". Then another, and another, each time thinking about what part you will move next.

Ya, I do that, but most of the tine it turns into a heaping mass of who-knows-what. Just a site with tons of random images... that would be perfect.

Hi Ericsnapple,
Funny you mention this. I have that on a regular basis.http://forums.polyloop.net/images/smilies/ermm.gif I am a person who works best with an assignment, but what to do when I don't have one and still want to create something. I decided to try to get inspiration from books I read, so now I am working on a short story from a national famous writer here in the Netherlands called Toon Tellegen. The story is only 1,5 page long but is in fact so complicated that I can fill lots of evenings with it.http://forums.polyloop.net/images/smilies/happy.gif
Maybe you can do something with this idea.
Here's a picture. (I hope)

A lot of the time I go around and look for contests... most of the time I don't actually make anything for the "contest" but use it to model something for that subject matter....

turn off the computer, and take a peek at something that you don't normally think about, maybe which you don't even like. Go talk to people with dissimilar interests. Often we just need to jump-start our brains. Removing yourself from a "routine" can spark some great ideas...

Do the opposite of what your comfortable with. It's the only way to grow, if you're a soft modeler than do a mechanical work or vice/versa.

drawing with pencil and paper does it for me, I also look at art books, that seems to spur me on.

edit : I think you should expect to have bursts or cycles of creativity, is not a constant thing, got to have some balance in life, so dont stress it. Go for a swim, fishing, movie, take the lady for a picnic in the countryside.

I start out with a pencil too.
but sometimes, just for practice, I will model some stuff thats sitting on my desk, or model the contents of my pockets, or one of my daughters toys.

sometimes I go weeks without an idea that is worth putting into 3d, so don't feel bad about that.
