I don't know about extinct. does that matter??? It is still good for certain things...especially if you like to use a vector illustrator program. It makes it very easy to import your vector shape and extrude and sweep them.

a vast majority of the models that are included with Carrara, are created with splines. Open some of them up and study how they are made.

That's true as in this example which you could open in the Scene wizard:

The thing I'm curious about, though, is that when you model in Carrara's Spline editor the model doesn't look smooth as you want it to look. Yet when rendered like the image above, it's completely smooth. Carrara indeed needs some revisiting.

I've found that once modeling is finished, it can be opened in the vertex modeler and smoothing used to make the choppy round parts smooth out.
There is a fidelity option in the spline modeler, but it seems limited in its ability to smooth things well.

Nate: the tips about the fidelity parameter.. you can enter 2000%... (yes, carrara isn't limited to 100%..)

Thanks, Thomas

I usually set that around 1,000%... will have to try the higher settings (didn't think it would do that)

Hiya.

Hash Animation Master is *still* 'splines only' for modeling. AM is one program that REALLY annoys the halibut outta me! If Martin would just get it in his head that supporting polygons would only serve to increase his customer base by, oh, say, a BAZILLION times.... *aarrrggghhh!!!!*

Anyways...heres an animation done in AM:

Oh: WARNING!!! This site can have some pretty "not safe for work" things on it, so you have been warned!

Hiya.

Oh, and being totally off topic here, but that site had a snip from the excellent DVD "What the bleep?!??!!" (about quantum mechanics). Here's a little snip from it that I found totally fascinating:

From what I know spline modeling is at it's most powerful in shade.

I am COMPLETELY mesmerize by the wire frame of models created using shade.

I saw some 3D female models the entire form is composed of just a couple of circles, it's....WOW....

This image is done by Yamag :D Japanese.

I almost certainly use spline modeling for torso then convert to polygon and add more details. ;p
