WOW... Before using my first 3D app, i tried to fake it with AI's gradient mesh. To me it's very counterintuitive, as everything about Illustrator seems to be. This guy must be a freakin' genius to do this kind of work....

The disadvantage of 2d is, as you guessed, it's 2d. There's only one fixed camera viewpoint. I've thought of mastering vector apps specifically Corel's Designer or CorelDraw in the past, but since I'm what I call a mid-range artist, I decided to go for 3d to supply the "missing links" in which only a real artist would know intuitively. Links such as where shades and shadows would fall on surfaces as well as their extents according to the specified light source. Also, one great thing about 3d is its generation of true perspective viewpoint. Which means you don't have to estimate distances caused by foreshortening. Plus you can rotate the object in any angle you wish.

With advanced modelers like Hexagon, technical illustration is now getting easier to do in 3d. And with Carrara as a rendering engine everything is now possible. The goal is to do it fast.

I agree he must be good. If they've made it easy it would be fantastic for modifying 2d images or adding to them. Just would be cool to change your angle and animate it... tough in illustrator.
