Re Deep Paint3d

Ok, I have Carrra5pro and Hexagon2, IF I had the money, which should be the better buy, ZBrush or Deep Paint.

Any general comments on Deep Paint?

Zbrush is the standard nowadays. Deep Paint is in need of a serious update if it wants to keep up with BP and Z. HAving said that I do own Deep Paint and find it a wonderful program even tho navigation is ancient, no mirror painting, and even no displacement painting. But you can still get some amazing results, it's really stable... if you are used to Photoshop you will b right at home. My work I have posted here has very little DP3d. I use Hex because it is very fast and I can lay down alpha Brushes like Z. I picked up DP3d with an educational discount so I could not pass up the deal. One other note is that in DP3d you have to flipp your model in Hex on export and flip the normals or faces...to get it work right in DP3d. It sounds like a bit of a workaround... I end up just saving maps and transfering them back and forth between DP3d and Hex. For me DP3d works just fine. If Daz would fix the seams problem then all would be good. If not, I will be using Silo then here soon for displacement .

Of course little can be said if DP3d is suddenly updated to keep up with Z. Which I don't know it's so quiet at their forums, no one talks...not even a word.

Not that I can really afford it, but I have bought Silo--the 2 version looks so good,
Any comments on this in relation to 3d painting?

From what I've seen from the beta team (that i wish i was on...) Silo 2 will have some nice displacement painting tools. It won't be nearly the resolution/speed of zbrush since zbrush is just a polygon monster (in a good way) but it's definatly going to rock. Those nevercenter fellas know how to code a great program. For texture painting I don't think Silo will have any tools since they have not announced them but they're being sneaky not telling us everything about the 2.0 release so we could be suprised. So if you're looking for a program for both displacement and texture painting I would go for Zbrush.

For just texture painting there is a neat little program that I'm currently reviewing for subdivisionmodeling.com called BlackSmith3d. It's a program for creating morph targets but there's also a 3d paint module that's pretty solid. www.blacksmith3d.com the only downside i've noticed is that the GUI can be a tad slow sometimes but it's a nice 3d painter for the money.

The displacement isn't realtime so it's kind of hard to use for that. It's basically painting a 2d texture map that will be displaced at rendertime so if you want a displacement painter Hex, Silo, zbrush will be the best for those...or mudbox when ever that's going to be released and what ever the price range will be for it. Blacksmith is good for texture painting and morphing.
