3d apps and integration

hello everybody!
so i spent about 5 years saving up for photoshop(cs3),hexagon(i have 2.2)and carrara(i just got it with cs3) i decided to get them after many years of investigating the career i wanted to focus on while in high school and now i am wondering,do i have the most efficient system for what i wish to accomplish? and what i hope to accomplish is making movies that can rival advent children(of course before AC it was the star wars scenes when they re-released the orginal trilogy with new 3d renders) i have been on photoshop since about version 4 and have used it for cover art for CDs,photo collages and painting and inking my hand sketches and of course web templates.
but the whole 3d thing is new to me. . .i had a buddy who used 3DsMAX and taught me basic box modeling. but with all my recent studies i have found that 3DsMAX is for games, maya for movies/vfx, & softimage for a little of both i just want to know what i have gotten myself into and if im on the right track?
is the daz/eovia software i recently bought(mainly because of MAX and MAYA's list prices-i figured instead of getting the one 3d program i could get PhotoShop,Hex,and Carrara) truly perfect to accomplish stunning movies, and action/drama series? without abandoning realism?

thanks in advance and sorry for the length of the message,im just trying to elaborate on my current situation.

P.S. i was kinda confused with carrara and hexagon, what's the difference and how do they also work together?

(Showing my bias?)
Pretty well, Carrara5Pro is the the best of the really complete/comprehensive 3D apps
but that is not saying that all those other big price apps are not superb in thier specialised areas.

Hexagon , for poly modelling, goes major steps above what you can do in the Vertex room in Carrara---but many would still think Carrara is still adequate for thier needs.

Anyone, really, could not do better than to start with Carrara and add other apps as thier knowledge, need for speciality, grows.

For example, I wonder how I ever now could do without the MoI Nurbs modelling app, and the 3D Coat 3d displacement and painting app,as an addon for Carrara!

Shiny

thanks for the knowledge brian. . . by MoI you mean moment of inspiration?
i was playing around with the demo of that,i do like its ease of use just not sure how much it costs! i stay far away from warez or what ever they are calling it these days.....and i have since posting this thread done some further research and playing around with hexagon,i havent delved too deep into my carrara yet,i have carrara6pro,just figured I'd hang around hexagon and further my modeling skills with out the clutter of graph editors, timelines and other unnecessary tools. but now im confused when you say C5pro is the most complete does that mean something is wrong with C6pro(stability,tools,ease of use, difficulty)???
i definitely feel what your saying and appreciate the help. most of my decision to buy hex and carrara was based on using MAX for a while,i became sufficient in it fast without tuts and manuals, when i played with hex it just felt right.
well, hopefully now that i know these will be efficient for now,i hope to return with a model!
cheers!

Sorry!!!!----I misstyped---I meant C6Pro!

Yes--Moment of Inspiration. For me, doing basic Nerbs modelling in MoI is just such a pleasure compared to Hexagon--or most other poly modelling apps. I then have been taking those MoI .obj into the Carrara 6pro Vertex room to do "finnessing" with the displacement brush.

And then I have 3D Coat--another joyous pleasure of an app to complement Carrara.!

I don't want to take away from Hexagon because it's probably still about the best poly modeller.
I am not into making "people"/monsters/etc, so the more "technical" workings of MoI Nurbs suit me.
Here is another example of a MoI/Carrara connection which I hope is interesting.

WOW!!
i see that the possibilities really are endless!
I have to unfortunately regain my modeling knowledge-had a pc crash that left me pc-less for 3 months, the new one ive been working on now doesnt support my old video card so i had to go thru every single 3d program demo i could find til i found one that would draw 3D correctly(plus be able to withstand Vista's randomness)
man you guys on this forum inspire me!
Brian,thanks again!!!!

With computers, seriously, you have to keep up to date. A good, medium quality card for 3D use would cost maybe up to $200? NEVER buy an old one. And, even then, with a new one, ensure you keep up with the update patches from the maker.

Here is another example which is MoI but could well have been Hexagon modelling, rendered in Carrara.

I agree some sites think everyone who is not a fulltime pro does not deserve talking to !
(And they argue that the app they use is the only one worthwhile whilst not having a clue about what the alternatives actually do)

Note--If I say something, it must be true--of course!

Have fun!

A must read interview--

especially, take note of the "Seven Golden Tips" on the last page of the interview!

TRUE!

you can go a long way with Hex -> Carrara -> Toeshop
I would suggest one other type of software...Zbrush or 3dbrush. either of these will save you hours of UV'ing and texturing.

after that you can move up in software based on your particular needs.

I have MudBox,i was looking to go for Zbrush, but ended up getting VUE 6 Xstream, figured that one would save me loads and loads of time on scenic environments and images. i like it better than the terragen built into carrara.
