I have both Silo and Hexagon. I do not see Silo, yet, improving on Hexagon overall.
Have a look at the $99 ViaCad app. Combined with say Carrara---WOW!

My son says ViaCad is equal to many of the apps costing in the many thousands! (He lectures on AutoCad!)

Probably almost anything is better at modelling than Autocad!!!!! I used it for years in my ex-job, and it gives me the shivers to model in it. To anything in it, for that matter...

As to Silo vs Hexagon for SDS modelling, in general, I believe it is a workflow preference issue.

Look for the tutorials by Cinnesleach in the official Silo forum. They're great.

ViaCad is the Rhino, Amapi---Nerbs type modelling app we have all been waiting for I think? Some very excellent tutorial movies at the site and on the forum.

For nurbs you can also try MOI. I tried it once, and didn't quite understand it. But that is me.

Well I love Hex cept it doesn't like my Macs much and wont work at all with OS 10.5.

Daz is also flaky at best and the few answers I have gotten from them have been anything but encouraging. Their answer to dual monitor issues is just ridiculous.

I'll look into ViaCad but I have a feeling from the look of the interface it may not be for me. but that is just from a picture so I will go watch the demos before I truly judge

I think the workflow thing is it.... a matter of personal preference.

I have had Silo for a long time and quit upgrading... the fixes and the breakdowns, the breakdowns and the fixes.... etc. etc.... just made my head swim.

Anyway, the much bashed Hexagon is friendly to me and I like it, so - as I said, it is personal attachment.

Thomllama's comment is one reason why I wish Hexagon was popular here at PolyLoop again... at PolyLoop you don't have to weed out so much nonsense to get a reasonable answer (or question, for that matter.)

I'm probably one of those people, but I'm in the process of doing a backflip.

I've just reinstalled Hexagon and upgraded it to 2.2, and most of my problems have disappeared. I'm not getting the seams issue with the painting tools when I export now either.

I also finally got around to watching Thomas's Nierd video and saw his edge modeling techniques, and now it's easily my favourite modeling program.

I wish I'd had a stable version earlier on, but it's all cool now. It's a pity Thomas and the others couldn't see this app through. Maybe Daz will come to their senses and let them have another crack at it.

ViaCad (Concepts 3D) is great!. While it's not quite as fun or as easy to use as MoI, it's filleting functions are probably the most robust I've ever seen. ViaCad will fillet almost anything you throw at it.

If MoI wasn't around then ViaCad would definitely be my #1 choice for NURBS stuff.

bwtr - I guess you aren't here anymore, but dang, you made me look.

ViaCad... erm... Rhino user bites his tongue... I gotta take another look at that one.
(Do they play that darn orchestra during all of their tutorials?)

... Hey, Shorty.... where are you??...

ViaCad is excellent. If it wasn't for this forum I probably wouldn't have heard of it (thanks BWTR).

Here i am ViaCAD is a powerful (and inexpensive!) program. For me it can not replace Rhino for modeling, but perhaps can fill some needs for MCAD detailing (which i am doing a bit more of these days) and also for creating BOM's and technical drawings. For the price, it is really unbeatable... Too bad the interface is so fricking horrible...

So as to not be in the line of fire when accusations of hi-jacking this thread about Silo start, I have started another separate thread investigating the merits of ViaCad here.
If you have anything to add - please feel free. If you find it irritating, don't.
(not sure if this link is right, but you can get there that-a-way)
