| The Future of 3D Graphics Will Be Shaped By...
...what? Real Time Collaboration It's like World of Warcraft for 3D artists. Work with your client or your favorite artist over your shoulder. Novelty or is this the telephone of our (3D) time? Exemplars: trueSpace Universal Format Exchange Create once, edit anywhere. Like having a Visa logo on your artwork. Will the Industry really allow one universal format or will constant change make it impossible for a single format to support whatever is in demand? Will it just be 'web browser wars' all over again? Exemplars: .FBX (Motionbuilder), COLLADA Immersive Creation No need to open another application, everything you need is right at your fingertips. But what is the right mix of features? Does shoddy or unequal implementation of a few features basically kill the concept? Exemplars: Carrara, Lightwave, most major 3D applications Dense Mesh Sculpting The devil may be in the details, but this feature is a godsend to some. The most well known application for this type of work has practically become a verb, but how many people really need to do this? Exemplars: ZBrush, MudBox Your thoughts...? |

1) Nothing good. What happens with dishes if all visitors will be allowed to access the kitchen to control head-cook in a real time? 2) Helps only if both packages share common set of features. For example, you can not export nurbs to Shade or Carrara from Amapi or MoI. 3) Universal tools will live forever. And will coexist with dedicated tools. 4) I presume dense meshes support in ZBR allows "pure" 2D artists not care too much about creating good topology. I doubd somebody in 3D needs 900 MB obj for not too complicated shape. But I did such stupid thing when I played with ZBR, and I see nothing bad in having such margin of safety. If mudbox can handle such scenes, I'm happy for it.

I think that all the tools (absolute meshes, fluids dynamics, real time dynamics, etc are already here the only thing is that they will be improved. The next real step should be in display devices and I think about holographic systems and the requirements needed for 3Deists for this major step. Maybe we'll have to talk about 4d ? |

Hmmm, I believe this will shape the future - I know it will shape mine! http://dlp.com/3d (Be sure to read the white paper which shows you how to create this content NOW using photoshop!) I've always said this is what's next. I never was crazy about Hi Def TV (not owning one of course) but now that I've purchased a DLP earlier this year, I got to see what all the hoopla was about - seeing the clarity is breathtaking at times. But to me, we still need a bigger change and THIS, 3D TV, I believe will be it. I remember as a kid looking into those View Masters; seeing the deer standing there in the field - imagine playing games and watching movies at home with that 3D experience... I dare say they'd have to actually tone down the content at that point - I don't believe I could watch something like Alien Resurrection >for the first time< in Hi-Def 3D! Honestly!I joke with my wife telling her we prolly lost 3-years off our lives watching 5-seasons of 24 with all the STRESS Jack Bauer (uh, we) went though in that series! Imagine experiencing hi-def television in 3D! I know there will be some fanatics that will complain loudly if they don't faint at least one time over a 3D movie they purchased! -Will PS - This to me ties in because once the glasses and TVs are common place, things like XBoxes and Playstations will be delivering the 3D content. Being able to work in your ZBrush, XSI or Modo with a connector to these TVs is only a months away if all this stays on course - THIS imo is the next major jump that's needed for the human race - 3D display technology...

That's very cool. Rhino 4 already supports the 3D shutter goggles, although i've not tried it yet. I expect at some point it may become a standard display feature for 3D apps... I wonder how it will affect the UI design of these programs? shorty |

I've never see 3D though shutter glasses, only red-blues. My wife and I have had our moments looking at some red/blue Mars images - even then the effect was breathtaking to see a DEEP canyon or crater! I can't imagine hi-def 3D, especially with full color purity - they may have to outlaw certain types of movies from being 3D! -Will PS - I had to laugh just now thinking about porno movies - what was that movie? Brainstorm? They had to yank homeboi out of that chair - what he was watching did look uh, interesting though!

Would we ever leave our homes? Ah, to be a home voyeur... Of course, at that level of virtual interaction, it's pretty much a given that high density meshes will be used in the project somewhere. I remember hearing somewhere about how the typical facades used behind television news broadcasters had to be upgraded since they weren't standing up to the new levels of scrutiny. If you are familiar with games like Neverwinter Nights and The Elder Scroll Series, i think you've seen how I think content will be delivered to us in the future. Machinima will probably be a very big player in the future. We won't be waiting for the next episode of Lost to air, we will be downloading it. Fox, NBC, ABC and the rest will all have their own 'studio' engines that will allow production houses to create their own 'Make Love Not Warcraft'. Our favorite shows will be produced by the kid down the street LOL. I gonna put this in the Carrara suggestion box LOL I guess I am more concerned (for the purposes of this thread) with the creation aspects of 3D Graphics as opposed to how they will be served. But in the future, I can see the line between them continue to blur. |

Just like Piem, the future in 3D will probably be Holographic 3D sculpting You will have very special plastic tools containing 3D sensors that will enable artists to carve or chisel blocs of holographic virtual stone or mud or water or whatever ... but that will be about 40 years in the future ![]() maybe you will even be able to put gloves on and model in 3D with your very own fingers without dirtying them

Other of course...or maybe I should say all of them. I don't know what exactly what real time colaboration is but everything I read would be very useful to many and very cool. In the future if there is a need there will be a digital way. Maybe that is now? Almost. People will always scour every corner for ways to make money (better than a pack of KFC rats ever could). People also like to eat and they eat opportunity. All this stuff will shape the future and certainly new stuff may emerge the rocks the industry. |
