Which to render displacement maps?

I've tried displacement maps in Carrara, but either I'm doing it wrong or it doesn't work.

For instance:
I create a displacement map in Mudbox (or whatever)
Now I'm looking for a program to do the render with.
  • Shade?
  • Amapi?
- - - Do they do displacement map renders? Can't find it in their documentation..?

I've downloaded Blender, but that is a complicated interface all its own that I may figure out someday.

Recommendations anybody???

Carrara should do this even though with Hex the seams are not so great. It may be that way with any complex deformation, I'm not sure and not experienced enough with it to say. I can export from Hex to .car format though preserving the displacement without much trouble. It then becomes an issue of tackling that problem.

Do you have a simple Mudbox export we could try out? I'd be curious to see how it goes on a simple object.

no real recomendations, I don't use Shade or Amapi, sorry

I have Blender, and it looks good. but I'm with you on the interface. I just sit there staring at it, wondering where to start. and the only manual is really old

Displacement seems to work fine in Carrara.. for me anyway, But these are from UV maps i have made in Photoshop, not from displacement painting.

So are you moving on to Mudbox??? I'm all Mac so I can't try it. the stuff I've seen done with it is flippin sweet.

Silo just released the 2 Beta for Mac yesterday, finally!!!
I hope to be doing some more displacement work now.

I wouldn't use Amapi for rendering; it's a great modeling app, but falls short in the rendering department. Carrara should do the trick, although it's not very speedy with displacement maps. Don't know Shade or Blender, so can't comment on it. With my initial attempts I was quite pleased with the displacement results I got with Modo, I haven't investigated much deeper yet but have seen some powerful mudbox-modo combo's.

Hth,
Wim

Carrara should work fine Nate, have you looked at the tutorial Thomas did in the Carrara section. What exactly is not working, you UV, then import to MB, paint, then export the map to Carrara using the same level of subdiv you peaked at in MB in the VM.
