Painter3D (I'm missing it)

A few threads below I saw some talk about a freebe 3D paint proggy.

That made me think of the old days when Painter3D was still around. I did a search on it and learned that Corel had bought it (along with Painter) and discontinued it afterwards.

Did anyone of you use it? Was it any good and why do you think it was axed?

I used to play with it just a bit, and with the (still minor) 3D skills I have today, I think I would be using it alot. I have to say I miss it, or atleast the app it could be now if it had lived on.

I still have a copy of it. I played around with it a bit before, but I can't seem to find too much use for it with the things that I do. If I were doing organic modelling I would probably use it to map regions of the UV map for basic coloration. Then I would complete the detailing in Paintshop Pro. Unless of course I was using real photos to complete the texture maps.

Bodypaint, Hex 2, and especially ZBrush have taken this to a new and better level. In Painter3D, you could ONLY use OBJs. The others should allow for better imports.

I agree, though. I also mourn the loss of what it could've been.

Bodypaint and Deep Paint 3D seem a bit pricey for a guy like me, but then again looking at Corel Painter's price I would assume Painter3D to be the same price as the other 3D paint apps are.

Under Corel ownership I doubt it though wether Painter3D could compete with the rest. If FractalDesign or Metacreations still existed and owned Painter3D, that could be another case. They were pretty innovative at the time.

What surprises me though is that there isn't an app for this job based on vectors. There are so many good natural media 2D vector apps around but none for this task. Advantages of such would be obvious; object based handling, flexible vector editing and ability to output to any bitmap size. As a more vector oriented person, this is the app I would invest my 500 euros for.

Hi,

I always use Metacreations Painter 3D, it is the best paint 3D program.
Work #1 with classic on MacOSX or Windows.

Check on ebay if you want Painter 3D.

Good luck!

Radagaz -> Thank you but I think that's their 2D painting app similar to Painter. For UV's or 3D painting one needs to get the more pricey versions from here: http://www.righthemisphere.com/produ..._UV/index.html

Cirdan -> I'm surprised that it is still sold. Thanks for letting me know. For the price of $29 it is cheap. I may have to go through old magazine CD's to see if it is there as a trial and give it a try. Maybe it is valuable still today as you say. Have you found anything to complain about it?

Hi,

Metacreations Painter 3D is Metacreations Painter 5.5 with all options for uv and paint directly on the 3D object or/and 2D map simultaneous!

You can import 3ds, obj and many other 3D formats and Painter 3D can export a render on a 2D image of the 3D view, a new 3D object or only the 2D map painted!

Cirdan, the features seem to be a match for a regular user. Good thing!

How do you find it performance-wise? Is it fast enough and smooth to use in a modern computer?

Painter itself is a good app and I'm comfortable with it so with your words on the 3D version I am looking forward to getting myself a copy of Painter3D.

Probably the main issue with Painter 3D was that it provided only one map per object (although with separate bump, transparency, etc.).

Although I still miss Painter 3D and what it could be now if continued, my interest dropped a notch after playing just a bit with Hexagon's painting. I remember people rant about it on this forum but I cannot remenber why. For my modest needs it was good. I could paint textures or normal paint with it, bump and displacement maps as well. If nothing else - it can be used to make a reference image which can be finished off in a regular 2D app.

I still have Painter3D on my computer. And still playing sometimes with it.
I've got it years ago with RayDream Studio (windows version, btw RDS was my entry in more serious 3D world at the time).

There was some problem running it in newer windows versions (I am on Win2003) but I've found a patch for all metacreations products.

Painter3D is somehow outdated now, but now and then I still create a map or two for render.
