I just purchased lightwave for the render engine. I'll take a little time and learn to use layout and the surfacing, I'm sure I'll be asking Pete alot of questions.

I bought mine using a competitive upgrade using my Amapi license. Just get in touch with a local Sales rep from Newtek

They call it "companion upgrade". I've payed 566.90 EUR for the version with printed manual, including VAT (19.6% in France) and shipping.

Just got an e-mail back from USA representative, that was a no go, no companion upgrade for Vue users, that kind of sucked...

So download, register Amapi6 (which is free), you COULD perhaps get a companion upgrade that way...

Is easy to model in Lightwave? I need to get a good modeller/renderer for my school projects, I used to use Hexagon and Carrara, but Hexagon is crashing so often that I cannot finish any model, I like Carrara as a renderer, but I would like to get my hands on an easy modeller, I can buy it with a discount because of my student status, so is Lightwave easy to learn for modelling? And how easy is the renderer?

Modeling in LW is very powerful but quite complex IMHO, as it's missing fancy stuffs like dynamic modeling and so on that really makes your life easier with Hexagon/Amapi. This said just look at the 1,000 of models made with LW and it's clear that it's working very well, but easy is not the word i would use to define LW modeler.
Also the rendering is more complex than Carrara (is it possible to have more simple BTW ?) but you have huge capabilities with it, and it can be ehanced with external renders to (Maxwell, Kray etc...)
Something to think about also it that you have a lot of resources (tutorials etc..) free or not on LW, that former Eovia's products are lacking.

Just my 2 cents.

Lightwave is an all around great system - it's just not as sexy as all the new-generation packages that are out now...

Modeling is solid but just a bit cumbersome. With plugins like LWCAD and VertiBevel, modeling is much better than without them. (VB is a universal MUST HAVE plugin for Lightwave!)

Texturing and rendering is straightforward as well, especially with the standard surface editor. When you're ready to move awn up, there's the Node editing and advanced cameras.

LW is an all around good package to have in my opinion. Hopefully with Newtek's constant advances, LW will be sexy again in the near future as well...
