Grendel:A great Hex tut - more coming I hope. When forming the hand grip, why do you move the surface extrude IN slightly before moving it outward to form the rubber grip?
Thanks,
H.Davey

H.davey, it creates an extra loop of edges to give the appearance that the body and grip are separate objects. I've attached a screenshot for comparison.

Grendel; Thanks for the reply - That screenshot makes it very clear. Your camera tutorial is a great inspiration (and help) for beginners like me. Thanks again

Like davey says... a valuable tutorial in many ways that gives clear insight into the mechanics of Hexagon.

I am currently doing an illustration project that involves making metal drums (barrels) used for shipping toxic waste. Prior to Grendel's tut, I would have been lost as to how to give the drums sharp corners at top and bottom and how to create the creased ridges that encircle the barrels....

Keep up the good stuff, Grendel!

No problem at all, I think there needs to be more project oriented tutorials for all levels of users. It's great software, but it's hard to find Eovia specific tutorials for new users. It's not hard to adapt another apps tutorials and still accomplish them but new users can have a hard time of it sometimes, and everybody is a new user at some point in something.

Grendel; I have gotten as far as the step to create the rubber grip section and have run into a wall. How do you restrain the Surface Extrude? When I select the facets to extrude and then click on the tool the whole mess jumps to where the mouse is up on the tool bar and no amount of struggling can I get it back to where it needs to be, lined up and recessed. There has to be a better way of controlling the surface extrude. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Hal Davey

OK - after an hour of practice on a test cube - I have a slight modicum of control over the surface extrude and I was able to move on past this point.
Cheers,

Hal Davey

Hi Guys.. I am brand new to Hexagon and consider my self a beginner to 3D
This is my second tutorial. I have read the manual and am trying to figure out how to use the tesselate tool.. I have located it but not sure how to set it to 7 or how to create 7 etc. Step two of this tutorial.

Cheers

I am starting a character tutorial for Hexagon and would like to know if anyone has any problems or improvement suggestions with the layout of the tutorial I used for the camera.

When you select the surface extrude tool from the above section.. look in the properties window it will then allow you to select the constrained extruder there then all you can do is ectrude along the axis.. I hope this helps and i understood your question.. I had the same problem at first... so many options/ tools to learn.

Grendel: To improve your tutorial :
  • Post only one screenshot per column. 3 is too much and you have to zoom a lot in acrobat to read perfectly the screenshot.
  • Remove the unused part of the screenshot when not needed (crop it). Like this, the reader can focus on the current step.
  • If you do your tutorial in PDF for a printing, then, remove the green background of your texte and put a more brighter background in Hexagon. Most of the users who print their PDF, do it in black and white, not in color.
But keep the icon tool in action for each step as you did, it's realy helpfull!

Feel free to ask me when you do the layout of your tutorial (you know my email my opinion, I'll be glad to help you! (even for the 3D part)

Thanks Thomas, good suggestions all.

The next tutorial will assume that the camera tutorial was done previously and continue to introduce other tools. This should make the number of screenshots required lower as users should already be familiar with the tools from the camera tutorial.

I'll crop the images more for the tools already used. For the camera I tried to use a standard interface for Hex as new users would recognize it more readily.

Good idea on the color choices, I use AutoCad at work and am used to the black background(easy on the eyes) but will lighten it for the tutorial. I had not thought about printing and all the wasted ink.

Good suggestions from Thomas... I appreciate your efforts and thought the camera tut was fantastic. Really looking forward to your character tutorial. Being new at this stuff, I know I "spin my wheels" a lot getting results that could be done much simpler and cleaner.

Go, dude!

Improving great tutorials

Grendel; I learned more from the camera tutorial than all the other tuts. One thing that you could do to improve the usability of your tutorials would be to put the frames of the tut on seperate pdf pages. I put the tut you did on the camera on my laptop next to my main computer so I could follow along as I worked the tut - only it was time consuming to have to scroll all over the place to get to the next screen capture and next line and keep track of which step was next. The screen captures themselves are great - I like the high resolution so I can read your tool info and so on. I would like to see more of your tuts on hardware (ie. product design - say a thumb drive, bicycle, airplane etc) as opposed to organics (there are tons of tuts on faces, figures etc but few on product design.) If you did a CD of tuts I would be in line to buy it.
Cheers, and have a great New Year,
Hal Davey

The Camera tute was excellent... I did not mind the layout of the tute because I am running dual monitors... PDF tute on one and Hex on the other.. But If I had a single display it would have been tough.. Great work Thomas and thank you I learned so much being brand new to Hex

Did you want users to post their final products of these tutes and if so where?
