A Start - but not finished

Grendel; I got to the point shown and then stoped because I did not know how to fix the red circled areas. I also learned not to add too many lines to an area (ie. around the eye piece) until I had worked out how I was going to carry on - too many points to move and not the right areas flat. I havn't worked out how to do the eye shade yet. I probably will start over rather than try to fix this model.
Thanks for all the helpful advice,
H. Davey

A unsmoothed view would be alot easier to troubleshoot. It looks good though, and you're right about adding lines haphazardly when relying on subdivisions and low poly cages to govern the shape of the object.

Trouble areas unsmoothed

Grendel: Here are the two trouble areas unsmoothed. How could they be changed to avoid the pinched areas?
Thanks,
Hal Davey

Hal, I've edited your screenshots and this should help fix your problems. A good way to help troubleshoot problems like this with 'pinching' is to enable the smoothing control cage view at the bottom of the dynamic geometry pallete. Just click on the little ball and turn it into a caged ball. Then you can see exactly where the influence is happening too much or not enough. I hope this helps.

Corndog - It looks good, keep going you're almost done.

Hey everybody! I'm new to this group and Hexagon as well. I'm following this tut to get to know Hexagon and I'm stuck on step two already How do I tesselate to a value of 7? Can't seem to hit on the right thing to make that happen.

Thanks

Off the top of my head.. Create your cube then hit tab..Look in the properties table and enter 7 in the tesselate option then validate.. Hope thats right.. have nothing here to look at...

Well I don't know whats up with my computer. Yesterday the tesselate box was not present in the tool properties box.

Today Hexagon was behaving oddly when I added a cube. The cube would move around the screen with the mouse. So after powering down the computer and restarting, all seems normal now and lo and behold, the tessalate box is now present.

My mouse has been totally erratic since moving to my new office.

On with the tut.

Agree with Digger 'Tesselate to value of 7' how?

Am also confused by reference above to Tab key? and Properties table?

I select cube and hit X (Or select its Icon) I get a 'Tool Properties' Window, but all it contains are two icons Continuous Tesselation by Segment and Tesselation by Slice, nothing else.

Any suggestions to where I am going wrong?

thanks

C.

If you zoom in on the picture of step two you can see in the tool properties palette the tesselation slider, this became available in version 1.21.

When you first make the cube look in the same location before you press enter to validate the cubes creation and you can enter the amount of tesselation you require during creation.. That palette is displaying correctly for the separate tesselate function.

Hah!

So it is, but where does that feature appear in the docs? When I searched for tesselate (10 hits) I saw no mention of it, just the tesselate tool.

Also simply repositioning the cube loses the tesselation amount box (which has been my next step after dragging it out to size). I understand now after seeing your comment and reading up on 'Cube' that selecting the manipulator also validates the object. Doh!

thanks, for helping

C.

it's not in the documentation, it can be found in the 1.2 What's New HTML.

New modeler, new to Hexagon. This tut has taught me an awful lot. I'm figuring out how to correct mistakes by manipulating the mesh rather than using the undo command, although I still use it a lot.

But I am stuck. I have completed the lens and extracted a circle. No matter what I have tried, I cannot get more points on the circle. It will not smooth. I think I missed something.

Using v2 with full DG. I'm gonna try the extraction again, but any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks.

Ok, just figured it out. All this time I have been smoothing the camera with the smoothing tool in the properties box. Didn't work for the extracted circle. When I tried it using the smoothing control icon in the vertex modeling tab, it works.

Thanks again.
