Not bad for a first try.
One thing you might want to try to avoid having to do all that bridge work:
When you get to the bridge step instead delete all the back faces so you have just the front facing facets.
Delete the faces that will form the holes in the gear.
Use the "Add thickness" tool to bring your gear back to 3d.
