VMware fusion: rhino/carara5/ hex/ zbrush

Hey computer gurus,

Finally got an intel mac and I'm trying to figure things out. Does anyone know if VMware (w/XP home on it) will work with these apps? I have read threads regarding Parallels not working. I also understand that Bootcamp will work. I'm just curios about VMware. Thanks.

Oh, and when I do set up boot camp I understand I need to partition a certain amount for the PC side. Any advice on this?? Thanks.

Hi !
I don't know for ZBrush and Rhino but Carrara and Hexagon are working pretty well on VMWare, as well as ProjectMessiah and also XSI !

I can't see why either Rhino or ZBrush wouldn't run well on VMWare since XSI is a pretty big program and run without any problem, using the 2 cores of my iMac here.

Cheers,
Laurent aka Tartiflette

I think zbrush runs fine on VMware. but I don't have any personal experience.

the partition is up to you. parallels defaults to a 8gb partition and may people say that is plenty. Don't worry you can change the partition size any time you want

I knew I would get good and quick advice. Thanks.

Yeah I've been reading that VMware tends to work better than Parallels. Any thoughts on this??

dooki, post your question on the Rhino NG, and i'm sure you will have this answered in a few minutes... I've read that Rhino will run fine under Parallels but personally i can't say for sure...

ZBrush is working with VMware, Parallels and Bootcamp without any problems. The best is always bootcamp anyway. The only trick to know is to activate the trailing mouse in the mouse parameters or you won't see your cursor under Zbrush with your pen tablet (and I think all the other software which are using the pen tablet..)

THanks Jonah and Thomgas.

I went to the Rhino boards and found that Rhino does run under VMware. I ordered my disks of VMware and XP and excited to try it out!

I'm running Carrara 5.1 on VMware.
Runs great, but, I'm running a quad core Xeon box and VMware only uses one processor.

Either way run, it runs great.
Cheers

No, no, you can set it to use two processors in the preferences.
Note that you can't actually use more than 2 processors/cores but it's already really great when using them in multithreaded applications.

Hey all,

Well I got ZB3 to work on bootcamp, but in VMware it asks me to activate again. I emailed ZB support and they thought the ZB would not work on the both partitians. If I were to activate through VMware I would have to activate again through bootcamp.

For those of you who run ZB on VMware how did you handle the activation issue? Much thanks!

BTW, I agree that ZB is better in BC but there are times when I want a quick hit of ZB and don't want to reboot.

It use one activation in bootcamp and another in VMware (or parallels). you have two activation by default, then you can use both of them
Don't forget to remove your activation (in the plugin menu) if you decided to not using Zbrush in one or other solution.
I use Zbrush with bootcam, VMWare and parallels without problems.

THanks Thomas.

The strange thing is that in VMware ZB asks me to either activate via online or enter activation code, which is what I am doing. ZB does not accept it. This is why I asked ZB support and this is when they made the comment above.

Not sure what you mean by remove activation. You mean if I want to use ZB in VM I need to remove my activation in BC? Thanks for your help.
