| Doodlin' Dude ![]() | Windows and ram Question
It seems (from what I hear) that I am reaching the ceiling for ram using Windows XP pro. I am at 2 gigabytes of Ram now pushing that with some of the projects. So, I hear that I have to get a 32 bit Windows system and that would be Vista in order to go with more than the 2 gigabytes of ram? True? I have heard differing opinions on the stability of Vista, and the use of different software programs with Vista. Any opinions on how Hexagon, Zbrush, Photoshop (7), Dreamweaver 8, Rhino 4, etc. like Vista? Thanks. |

XP pro can manage up to 4Gb RAM, but one 32 bits process (carrara.exe is one process) can "only" allocate itself up to 2Gb of RAM. If you want to use more RAM, you need to have both a 64 bits operating system (XP 64bits for example) with 64 bits compiled programs (it does not exist for Carrara). Then the RAM limit is something like 4Tb of RAM, but with more powerfull version of windows than the XP Pro which is "limited" to 128Gb i think...

Ok Thanks for clarifying this ![]() Sooooooooo.... If I Have Windows XP 64 bit OS.... Will Carrara still run inside that (even though it can't access more than 2 gigs)... I mean could I run both 32 bit and 64 bit softrware under Windows XP 64? Thanks Last edited by Nate Owens; 7th October 2007 at 22:39. |

Forget about Vista still, forget about XP64, still. Stick with the standard Xp(32) and 4GB ram untill they have sorted out ALL the problems, and have apps able to to work with them. Your best bet, BY FAR, is to get a top notch card that can work fast with OpenGL.. |

I'm going to have to do some research. My graphics card is fine - works well with Zbrush, Hexagon, all the heavy hitters I have used. I hit some memory issues when using Zbrush... and in general more ram (I'm at 2 gigs now) would seem to be the answer for boosting up my system - that and going to a multiple processor system. Some say if you want more ram than 2 gigs you must go to 64 bit, others say that Windows XP pro (which I have) can do 4gb. When I get to my other computer (this is from the laptop) I will go to the wiki and take a look. Chances are I will stay with what I have for a while, but dancing around trying to milk it is a bit frustrating. Thank you guys for all the good info and pointers.. PolyLoop and the gang that hangs out here ROCKS! |

Here is info http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...AE/PAEmem.mspx http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa366778.aspx about memory limits in 32&64-bit and some memory tricks in 32-bit Windows systems. And here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...loringx64.mspx Charlie says exaclty, that 32-bit app need to be compiled with /3GB switch in order to be able to use additional gig of address space. However, with regular 32 bit app you can have not big, but some advantage on a 64-bit system with more than 4 GB RAM by keeping many apps open simultaneously without swap them out. Even operating system itself + anti-viral programs et al may use 500MB, eating the memory available to your application. What is bad about XP 64 Pro is its restriction of CPU using - it can not use more than 2 CPU, and I don't know how it will behave on 4-core CPU. In the end it's not too new version of OS.

Thanks for the tips. I'm working on a series of projects that will hopefully help finance my system upgrades, so all the data will be useful. It seems that the common factor I am seeing when I inquire of those using some heavy duty software making complex graphics is the use of mulit-core processors (duo and quad -core). My system is just a single core, so upgrading that along with better/faster bus will be a main focus. I think I will stay with the 32 bit OS for now and see how the technology/stability issues shake out. |
