Premade Content and Polyloop

Avoid as much as possible pre-made content & related questions.

This point is -very- important. Polyloop.net (and Amapi.net & Eovia3D.net before) have a long history of 3D creation. It doesn't mean that it's forbidden, because not everybody can create a full character for example. But images which only include pre-made content and which was only rendered in an external software won't be appreciated.

Then, it's the same for technical questions: some users are specialists of Poser on Polyloop, but not the majority. Also, a lot of dedicated forums related to Poser / DAZ studio already exist.

Even if it can be concidered as an art image, we, at Polyloop.net, are not looking for this kind of creation. We prefer a beginner creation, but made from scratch.
We hope that you will understand that point

As I understand it, it is ok to use 3rd party content when they are an accessory, not the main theme of the image.
So for a house render (which I do a lot), having a car and a tree made by somebody else, but the theme of the scene (the house), I do myself.

Am I right, Thomas?

I see it this way.

If you buy a model, put it in a background that you bought, then add some free lighting setups, a few downloaded props and then render, you haven't created anything. Now this is not wrong and a lot of people enjoy this type of art, but, Thomas would prefer not to encourage this approach on polyloop.

If you model a car, put put it in the same background that you bought, then add some free lighting setups, a few downloaded props and then render, you have created something - the car. The rest is just a setting for your creation. This is what Thomas would like to see here.

The other way I look at it is that this site is not so much about the 'art' of 3D but more about the 'craft' . How it is done, the steps and methods used, etc.

Here's a quote, which sums it up: "Painting consumes labour not disproportionate to its effect; but a fellow will hack half a year at a block of marble to make something in stone that hardly resembles a man. The value of statuary is owing to its difficulty. You would not value the finest head cut upon a carrot." Boswell: Life

QUESTION:

In sculpting (as with zbrush or silo) is using a pre-made base mesh of a figure or head or parts thereof (made by someone else, but available to all) as a starting point considered a violation of this rule? The end result usually has no resemblance at all to the base mesh that was used initially.

I usually make all of my bases from the ground up in Hexagon, but there are times when having a raw base mesh as a starter is a real time-saver.

Should I assume that only modeling done entirely "from the ground up" should be posted?

no, we mean by pre made content is the stuff which is just an assembly of various premade content to create an artwork. In your case, it's juste a base as a big transformation, then no problems.

Nate our main concern is for Poser related premade content in the gallerys not base meshes.
i understand as a commercial illustrator you need to use any means availible to achieve a deadline, thats not a problem
if fact any insights you can share on this topic are most appreciated.
please remember this site is a 3d modeling site, the goals here are to learn 3d modeling techniques, uv mapping etc not posting poser related content.
this isnt aimed at you Nate btw thats for everyone
for the record i own poser 4/5 and 6 and yes you can mention Daz just dont do it too often
